Do you have a gate keeper? Who are you keeping out?

This issue puzzles me all the time.  Agents that do not give out their cell phone number, title companies that never return phone calls, lenders that are consistently unreachable, etc...  We are all in the service industry- we service our clientele and we need to be accessible!  If you have a gatekeeper- who are you trying to keep out?  Why are you not letting anyone through the gate and how much business have you lost as a result.

My promise to my clients and customers is to answer my phone as often as possible and if not possible to return the call quickly!

It feels like service levels are dropping, in my area many attorney's have let staff go, and are relying on third party title services... Not knowing who to call and waiting for that unknown person to call back has been frustrating !!!  Even the easy deals need to be baby sat right up to the closing to be sure the other guy is doing their job.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

If you ignore the customer, they will go away.  Eventually there will be no more annoying calls from them.  You're right, it's puzzling.

I employ a reapid response system myself, no matter how good or bad the client is.  I can be rest assured that the ball has been left in their court for the next step, vesus on mine.  It is such a pet peeve of mine when agents do not get back to you in a timely manner.  Worse, I love the agents that leave a voice mail saying not to call them!  Just email them.

Robert-  Absolutely, and I hear agents, mortgage broker/lenders complain all the time about not having enough clients- if they would answer their phones the work is there!

Mike-  Totally agree from both sides of the coin, If I don't return calls- my fault my problem, if they don't return my calls or my clients calls- I quit referring business.  I cater to my clientele and expect my business associates to also cater to them!  If we keep everyone happy we will continue to have business.

Jennifer- You and I would have an awesome tennis match because our philosophies are the same!

Thanks for reading everyone!

Hi Shanna -

You nailed it!  Business people that conduct their business by being the gate keeper as you put it are quickly removed from my list of people to work with.  If you're going to be in the business step up and be in the business.

Regards from the Q

One reason, we, as a nation, have been declining in production and high quality service is we seem to accept mediocrity.

Just look at the folks that let their pants hang around their butts and can hardly walk a straight line because they are more focused on the electronic games they carry around rather than on the more interesting things life has given us.

And if they do try to communicate, it is in acronyms and misspelled words or some abbreviation that requires little or no skill to do that communication.

Service to others is hard work and requires a certain lack of selfishness, something else that is missing these days, and the lack of responsiveness to someone who has asked for our attention is a sad result.

Don,

Absolutely!  I am always amazed when a call, email, or some sort of communication goes un-returned.  Another aspect is many of these people and the arrogance that they carry with them like armor.  Maybe that is what instills a false confidence in "the gatekeeper" by customers.  Thanks for reading!
