Update on my mother-in-law Jackie and my friend David

I recently wrote two personal posts that have generated a lot of sincere concern from my Active Rain friends:

A Day of Clarity for my Family (about my mother-in-law Jackie) and

My Friend David (about a dear friend battling cancer for the second time this year)

Since I have received a good number of phone calls, private emails, and comments asking about how they are doing, I wanted to take a few minutes to give an update on both of these important people in my life.  I have also included some older pictures of Jackie (easier to find today on short notice), and a pretty recent photo of my friend.  The second picture is of Jackie and my wife Pam when Pam was a baby.

After that original post was written about Jackie, the doctors started her on a very powerful pain medication called Suboxone, along with an anti-depressant.  Suboxone is also given to help heroin addicts, so you can imagine how strong it must be.  A day or two after she started taking it, we noticed that her mind was slipping very quickly.  Over a 24-hour period, she went from saying a few odd things, to not knowing who we were, to not speaking.  Needless to say, this was more than a little worrisome, since we had already cut her Suboxone dose in half at the advice of an ER doctor friend of mine (later confirmed by Jackie's physician, who was UNREACHABLE on Sunday when we needed him the most).

After we cut the dose, Jackie immediately starting going through withdrawal, and she was up all night Monday.  She slept the entire next day, and when we couldn't get her to speak at all, we called EMS to come check her, and they took her into Seton Hospital, where she has been since Tuesday night.  Pam spent the first night there with her, since Jackie seemed very agitated.  Pam and I both thought that there was a strong chance that her mother would not make it through that night - she simply looked too sick.

She did start speaking again that evening, but none of what she said made ANY sense at all.  It was some of the worst delerium that I have witnessed, and I used to work in a geriatric hospital when I was a teenager.  Suffice it to say that we have tried to keep a sense of humor about it, since some of her comments are actually very funny.  The doctors immediately took her off of the pain meds, and they gave her Haldol so that she could sleep better.

Over the past couple of days, she does seem more lucid, but not all there yet.  She knows my wife and most of what she says makes sense now, but there is still some confusion.  They are discussing having another back surgery since her MRI came back showing additional damage, but Pam is quite hesitant to go this direction with her mom, because her kidneys may not be strong enough (she is on dialysis three times/week) and because the first back surgery is what initially started this domino effect of negative symptoms.

We have around-the-clock caregivers stationed at the hospital for now, so that we can get adequate rest for a few days.  I thank all of you who have been praying for Jackie and for me and my family during this time.  Please continue to pray for peace for all of us, wisdom and guidance on how best to proceed, along with prayer for healing for Jackie.

My friend David (pictured here with his wife Jan on a date night before his illness returned) had a PET scan Monday which was clear of any additional cancer (YES!), although he still has the oral cancer to deal with.  However, the fact that he is cancer-free elsewhere is very good news, and it rather dramatically changes his prognosis.  He was scheduled to be released from the hospital today, and they have an appointment at 4pm today to see the surgeon here in Austin, to make sure that he can handle this delicate procedure.  If not, it is my understanding that they will have to travel to MD Anderson in Houston to get it done.

Again, I thank you all so much for your sincere interest in my friend's well being.  He is one of the finest men that I have known, and I believe that he will make it through this.  Please continue to pray for healing for David, and for God to put the best possible doctors in charge of his care.

If you have any questions, please feel free to put them here in the comments or call or email me if you want to.  Thanks!

I will keep both in my prayers Jason - so sorry to hear about your Mother-in-laws changes in mentation.

Sincerely,

Grace Safrin

GRACE - Thanks for your continued support on this issue.  The doctor told us that her mentation may improve more after the medicine is dialyzed out of her system completely.  Also, we are hoping for some improvement with the anti-depressants as well.  I truly appreciate your prayers!

10/26/2007 04:37 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

Jason...  I will pray for them both...  And for you and your family...you will need strength, as well, in coming days...

LISA - Thank you so much for your prayers.  Yes, we will need strength, and energy!  Much appreciated, my new friend.

Jason, I'll keep them in my prayers.  I'm glad you can have people with her around the clock.  It was a huge relief to me that we were able to do that with both of my Grandmas.  There was ALWAYS a family member with them.  A lot of people gave up their time and rearranged schedules, but knowing we worked together like that still means everything to me.

I know the guy who invented PET scans, he and his kids (they're my age) are WONDERFUL people.  He's a friend of my Mom and step Dad and unbelievably kind.  Maybe you'd like to know that he believes science proves the existence of God, and can explain why he feels that way.  He's really inspiring.  And somehow I feel better knowing people are getting such high tech treatment using equipment invented by a guy that feels the technology connects you closer to God.

I could say that better if I worked on it, but I think you'll understand.

Thanks for the update, Jason. Will continue to pray for Jackie and her recovery, she is too young to endure this. Get some rest.

Jason

You will be rewarded so many times over in this life and beyond for showing such care and compassion in all that you do.....

May they both continue to show an improvement in their individual battles, and may you and your family continue to grow as a result of your kindness.

10/26/2007 05:01 PM by Bill Nazur (Nazur Enterprises, Inc. & BAMG)

SARAH - Thanks for the prayers.  They appear to be badly needed right now.  Since my wife and I are both only children, the other caregivers are actually paid rather than family members, but they are very good.  She needs this level of care for now.  That is very cool that you know the guy who invented PET scans, and that he is a believer.  Don't sweat it - I completely understood what you were trying to convey.  I hope you have a great weekend, my friend!

10/26/2007 05:01 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

MISSY - I completely agree with you.  Too young and far too kind.  I hope that her suffering will abate soon.  Thanks for your continued prayers for both of them.

BILL - Thanks so much for your kind words, my friend.  Regardless of the reward, I feel as though we are called to do these things.  My family is incredibly important to me.

JASON:  I'm glad to hear that both Jackie and David seem to be doing much better than earlier in the week.  I know that these have been trying times for you and Pam, and I'm sure that there are still challenging days ahead.  Together, I know that you'll get through all of this.

10/26/2007 05:16 PM by Adam Waldman - Long Island REALTOR® (RE/MAX Best)

ADAM - Thanks for your support, buddy.  I am also happy to see improvement on both fronts.  Yes, it has been challenging and quite stressful, but (as you said) we'll get through it no matter what the outcome is.

10/26/2007 05:37 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

Jason thanks for the update.  I'll continue to pray for Jackie, David and you and Pam.  You will need all you can muster to get through this.  I know this probably sounds crazy but has your mother-in-law seen a chiropractor?  I used to think they were quacks up until last November when I slipped a disc in my back.  My GP wanted to give me a prescription for pain meds (another addict in the making) and not really treat the problem.  My husband urged me to see his chiropractor and because I could barely get up, I agreed.  I sat in the waiting room with tears from pain (mind you I delivered three babies with no drugs) on Saturday and by Tuesday I was back to seeing clients.  I've proceeded to educate myself on chiropractic medicine and it's truly amazing what I've learned about interrupted messages from the brain to our nervous system when we are out of alignment.  Not sure if it would help but may be worth looking into.  Keep your faith, you'll get through it.

10/26/2007 06:43 PM by Sandy Noll - Realtor, eAgent (Keller Williams Realty Kirkland - NWREA, LLC)

SANDY - I will bring this up with Pam and see what she thinks.  Thanks for your continued prayers for all of us.  It means a lot to me.  Faith can get us through anything.

Jason - You and Jackie and Pam are still in my prayers. I know the agony you've been going through.

Jason,

Sorry, my friend. I haven't been in the Rain for a few days and I didn't realize things had gotten this bad with your mother-in-law. I hope and pray that it will end well, after everything that's gone on so far. The news about your friend is heartening, though. I will add him to my prayers as well.

Take care of your wife and kids through all of this. We sometimes lose track of the things closest to us as the pressures mount.

Jason:  I'm sorry to hear about Jackie but glad to hear she's doing better at least a little...that's some wierd and powerful drug they had her on.  That's gotta be pretty hard.  As far as David is concerned, glad to hear it hasn't spread and thanks for keeping us posted. :)

10/26/2007 08:59 PM by Shannon Lefevre Naples, Florida CRS (John R. Wood REALTORS Inc.)

ANDREW - Thanks for stopping by to check out the update.  Thanks also for your prayers for both of them.  Tonight my wife saw Jackie and she is actually about 80-85% "there" mentally, so that is a huge improvement.  They said that the dialysis (three times weekly) will remove the pain meds from her system a little at a time.  She asked to speak to me on the phone, and she sounded very mellow but lucid.  She also is not in pain, which was a bigger surprise.  Overall, I think the news is good on both fronts, at least for right now.

10/26/2007 10:41 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

SHANNON - Please read my comment above to Andrew.  You are correct - it was an exceptionally powerful pain medication.  The doctor actually referred to it as "the big guns", which should have told us something, I suppose.

10/26/2007 10:42 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

TO ALL - I just wrote a comment to Andrew that I thought I should share with the entire group:

Jason,

I don't blame you for hesitating on the additional back surgery for Jackie.  Even if she is strong enough to withstand another invasive procedure, does back surgery EVER work?  I'm glad for you to have a temporary reprieve as you will be back on duty soon enough.  That sounds promising that her fog is lifting somewhat.  Perhaps the drug is so powerful that it just needs a lot of time to fully filter out of her system.  Get your sleep now while she is in good hands.  This will be a tough sell for Pam, but she needs to go home and rest up as well.  Jackie will be back with you guys soon, and you'll need the strength and clarity that any extra sleep can provide.

As I mention in the comment stream of your original post about David, that is awesome news!  As long as that nasty crap is isolated, his prognosis should be excellent.  Make sure he allows them to take whatever they need to be sure they are 100% rid of it.  An associate of mine has a brother who is dying of cancer.  It originated in his eye.  They saved the eye by zapping it with radiation, and gave him a clean bill of health back in May.  They advised him that the only way to be sure was to take the eye, but he was satisfied with the test results.  A month ago, he went in to the ER with pain in his abdomen.  The cancer had returned, and raced throughout his body.  He is merely playing out the string now.  The moral of the story (not meant to be pessimistic) is to always err on the side of cutting too much rather thasn too little.  If there is one thing you can do for him, help him to understand this.

Best possible luck on both fronts, Jason.

10/26/2007 11:01 PM by Paul Slaybaugh, Scottsdale AZ Real Estate (Realty Executives)

PAUL - You are a good and caring friend.  We are indeed trying to "rest up" for her eventual return to our house.  I guess I didn't make it totally clear in the post, but Pam did spend one night at the hospital, and she has been at home since then.  We hired caretakers to sit with Jackie around the clock through tomorrow morning.  We will all go see Jackie tomorrow (probably around lunchtime to make sure she eats), then we can assess whether she still needs a caregiver while she is in the hospital.  It was a definite necessity until today, because she kept trying to get out of bed even though she couldn't walk at all without lots of assistance (we didn't want her to fall and cause further damage).

As for David, I feel sure that they will opt for more rather than going conservative, but I will mention this to him when I see him again, just in case.  Thanks for the info and the story.

Talk to you soon -

JENNIFER - Thanks for your kind words.  We saw Jackie again today for a couple of hours.  She has perked up quite a bit, and she knows all of us, but she is still pretty confused.  It may take a couple of weeks to have a better idea of how much of this confusion is from the meds.

10/27/2007 03:20 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

JULIE - Thanks for your kindness, and for the powerful imagery (I agree).  I also hope that this can help someone else.  Please also read my comment above to Jennifer.  I wanted you to see this also.

10/27/2007 03:21 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

Jason- yes, I was thinkig that the meds have caused a lot of this...Doctors just sort of guess at the dosage, and it isn't till something happens/or doesn't,  that they adjust them.  hang in there.....

Jason

The miracle of prayer is strong indeed, I thank god everyday for the blessings he has given us and thank him for looking after your friend David. I hope he continues to give you strength so that you and your wife can continue in the care of your mother in-law. Peace.

KATHY - Good to see you.  Thanks for your kind words.  I agree with you - I think doctors just make a guess and then see how it plays out from there.  We saw her today, and she was more herself, though still a little confused about things.  Time will tell, I suppose.  Have a great Saturday, my friend.

GARY - Good to see you.  I hope you are up and about now.  I also thank God for the blessings he has bestowed on me and my family.  Thanks for your prayers, my friend.  I hope you have a terrific weekend.  I'm guessing that you have a newfound joy now.
