Windows shortcut keys - the Start Menu Button Shortcuts

By

Most users are familiar with a few of Windows shortcut keys - ctrl c - ctrl v.  If not Craig Daniels wrote a nice blog regarding Windows short cut keys.

Not many Windows users are familiar with another shortcut key - the Start Menu key and its shortcuts.  Most users only know it as a quick way to the Start Menu.  But the Start Menu key has some very handy shortcuts but you seldom see them documented anywhere.

So here are the ones I use:

Start Menu + E opens Windows File Explorer

Start Menu+ M Minimizes all windows - great when your boos walks in the room while you are surfing the net!

Start Menu+ SHIFT M Maximizes those windows when the jerk finally leaves!

Start Menu + D Same as Start Menu+ M takes you to your desktop, but now you have to maximize those windows 1 at a time when he leaves

Start Menu+ R Opens the Run command dialog box

Start Menu + U Opens the utility manager dialog

Start Menu+ O Opens a Internet address entry dialog

Start Menu+ F Opens a find search window

Start Menu + L logs off the current user.  Great when that boss asks "what are you doing?"   And you can answer " my computer just crashed and I am rebooting".  Then he thinks he can't see what you were doing.  Until you log back in and enter

Start Menu+ SHIFT M and you are back in business!!!

If anyone else knows any others, please pass them along!

Also if you are a tab based browser user don't forget:

Ctrl 1, 2, 3 ... 9 takes you to the tab 1, 2 etc. from left to right and Ctrl 9 takes you to the last tab regardless of how many you have open.

And of course Alt Tab toggles last window.

Now if anyone knows a keyboard short cut for toggling last tab that wold be awesome.  Being a keyboard shortcut junkie, of course I cope & paste.  And I want to Ctrl C, tab to last tab and Ctrl V!!!!! without reaching for the mouse!!

But Bob - that is what that "mouse" is for.  Only using keypad commands -- wow!

Thanks Mark.

Steven the mouse is too slow.  It is very usualy for changing the "focus" point (object on a screen you want to work with) or selcting objects.  But moving your hand from the keyboard to the mouse and back to the keyboard is too slow and wasteful when a 2 or 3 keystrokes does the job.

I have honed this technique to the point I can do a complete CMA, presentation package of about 15 pages, and fill out all listing forms in ~30 minutes.
