My Weekly Visit to Analytics

By
Home Stager with Innovative Artistry

Well I try to visit Analytics at least once a week to see what traffic I am receiving & approximately where it is coming from....  I wish I could figure out "specifics" to follow up, but wanted to share a brief overview of what it told me this morning.  I do check more frequently at times depending on what I have put out into the market place.  Ironically I received a lot of traffic after I blogged about my visit to Costco & the Stuffed Olives with Garlic & Jalapeno & Wasabi Doritos....  Here is what this Monday morning brought to light.

I was thrilled that I was discovered in "4" countries...."3" outside the United States.

1. 17 3.88 00:00:56 88.24% 17.65%
2. 3 1.00 00:00:00 0.00% 100.00%
3. 2 1.00 00:00:00 100.00% 100.00%
4. 1 2.00 00:02:17 100.00% 0.00%

This area told me "where" my sources were coming from....  You will see the majority were from Active Rain!

5 21.74%
google (organic)
5 21.74%
3 13.04%
iahsp.com (referral)
2 8.70%

Then you will see what key words were used to find me in these searches....(so that may be I can improve)

KeywordsVisits% visits
1 20.00%
1 20.00%
1 20.00%
1 20.00%
1 20.00%

It gives you a wonderful graph at a glance with a number of visitors per day if you scroll over....

graph 092011 visit to google analytics

I can not reduce this in the copy & paste, but it tells me how many visits - how many were "new & unique" visits, how many pages were view, how long the average time on my website, and "bounce rate"...well bounce rate was a mystery to me until I read this article....it appears that under 50% is "an average bounce rate...higher & you have a problem" per the article on INC.com.  It also tells me the percentage of visitors that were new verses overall visitors.

http://www.inc.com/guides/2011/01/how-to-reduce-your-website-bounce-rate.html

Well obviously there is so much more work to do in just starting up with all of this...but little by little I hope that results & improvements start happening.  I found it really interesting to see the wide exposure in the various countries.

I am not sure how many follow their results on Google, but it may be worthwhile to see when traffic is down & when it is up?  I am trying to narrow down what can improve my traffic.  Active Rain is at the top of the referring sites:)!  It is free to sign up by the way.  I also just heard it is beneficial to post your AR Blog to your Google Blog....so I am going to start trying that today...starting with an article about my analytics :).

Thank you Google, Active Rain & Inc.com!

Dear Lisa & Robert ~ I am glad & was hopeful it would be useful to others.  Thank you for stopping by & I heard also that it helps to have a "Google Blog" along with the analytics & you can basically copy & paste or upload your AR Blog there.  I believe it helps with connecting the circle of traffic...  I believe that is what I got from the reading.

I usually check out my stats fom time to time as well.  However, I must admit that I have had little time to focus on it much.  It is yet another thing on my list of things to do!

Dear Lisa ~ Thank you for visiting.  I agree that it is difficult sometimes to do amongst the many, many other things.  I am just trying to not let my efforts run astray & find out later that they haven't been working all along.  There is a case where a lot of saturation is great, but I am not sure, as it is all is a bit new to me, what social media & optimizations are best?  It is always great to see consistently that AR is at the top (well at least for the past 3 months) & I don't have reason to expect it to change.  I feel others may find the same as well.  Thanks again & it was great to have you visit.

Pam - Looking at your analytics is important, and I probably should check them more often.

Dear Sheila - Yes, it has been great!  I have gone between agonizing every day, to not looking for weeks & seeing a big shift, to now trying to look about once or twice a week.  I think that some patterns may take a few weeks or a month?  I still want to learn more how to set it up to break the stats down further.  Thanks for the support :)!

Dear Christine ~ I am not sure if it is for everyone....  I just felt it worthwhile & thought may be others may wish to see efforts & how they are resulting?  I think you find time to do this when you feel it in your gut.  As I mentioned above...I used to agonize over it "daily" then I put it to rest for a bit & that may have been too long...now I am focusing on a more regular schedule of monitoring that brings me comfort.

Hi Pam, you are a lot further along that most people, a lot of agents, etc...are even tracking like they should be, I am in the process of setting up, updating, etc...multiple sites, profiles, etc...and also need to add analytics to them all.  thanks for the reminder, and looks like you have a good start.   thank you for you comments on my cat conundrum and for your thoughts on Moose.

Dear John - Thank you & "your graphs" are impressive!  I will actually go back there now, as I had to put down the computer a little today...  It is "extremely" time consuming to get all the profiles & posts up to date & I just did the new Google Blog, as someone said that helps, Google Profile, Google Places.   I am not sure if you can just upload one blog to the other, or if it is only copy & paste to it.  Today I did the copy & paste of the AR blog to the google blog.  Little by little...I am trying, lol.  Thanks very much!!

Dear Janet ~ Thank you & as someone new to it all...I can only hope.  Thank you for the support.  The article did help make me feel a little better as it does take a shift now & then & I didn't understand bounce rate at all.  Thanks so much for visiting!!

Hi Pam, Great reminder to check the analytics.  I do it fairly infrequently despite the fact that it is always fun to see where the visits are coming from.

I've never been able to get Google Analytics set up. In fact, Google just doesn't like me if I try to do something over there. However, it really does like my ActiveRain blog posts!

Pam, isn't it amazing what you can find in Google Analytics? 34% bounce rate isn't bad at all for just starting out. Oh, definitely want a HUG button :)

Dear Russell ~ I find it hard to believe it doesn't like you!!  Yes, it "does" like AR for sure! :)  Thanks for visiting!

Dear Sharon ~ Thanks so much, yes, it is all new...so hopefully not terrible, but you never know so that is why I am trying to balance.  Maybe with enough pressure, there can be a "hug button"??  :)!  Thank you again!

I will try to stop by in the morning when I am more fresh....  Today was a long day.  Hugs & night!

You wrote: Dear Maureen - This is not my Active Rain Blog, those stats are within our "My Home" (which you may already know)  This is to my website outside of Active Rain, but it shows that the people came from AR directly to my website.  I hope this helps?  Thanks for commenting.

I am pretty familiar with ActiveRain, so yes I know where the stats are for ActiveRain posts are.*  We did not have those stats in the early days of ActiveRain but I use them I know what Google Analytics is too, I've had a Google Analytics  account since 2005 or 2006?  I have Google Analytics set up on  my WordPress.org blog, another blog (the blog I started in 2005), one of my two real estate websites  and all three of my ActiveRain outside blogs (separate domains.)

*You have an ActiveRain Outside blog.  Did you know that?  The little green and white badge with a ! shows you have an Outside blog.  If you set up the blog and claim a domain and add Google Analytics those stats for that domain tell you about how well you are doing on the Outside blog.  It looks like you have NOT set that up as you are using the generic "My New Outside Blog"   this post is posted to Originally posted at: "My New Outside Blog: My Weekly Visit to Analytics"

I asked "is this traffic on your website?  An AR Outside blog?" not because I do not understand ActiveRain or because I do not understand Google Analytics but because I was unclear what you were talking about.  I could see you did not have your Outside blog set up on another domain, so I wondered if you were measuring "My New Outside Blog" or another site.

Dear Maureen - I am sorry...I truly didn't understand your position with the question.  I wasn't trying to say that you did or didn't know & you just helped me learn that I could separate the two.  I didn't know this & I have tried to set up domain, but it wouldn't take my domain name to link them together, so I stopped with what "I" did not know yet.  I did post a generic one & felt well at least it was a start.  I am still learning & any expansion on this is helpful.  I did not mean to offend if I did, as 1) I am relatively new & simply blogging as I discover & 2) I do not even pretend to know what each person knows in this very, very large group.

Thank you & I do appreciate whatever you may be able to shed?  I can delete my remark if you wish or you felt it was an inappropriate or inaccurate response??  Again thank you for taking your time to visit.  It was from my main website.
