Today i come before you quite alarmed, i feel no one is listening and every child's educational experience in Manchester NH is on the verge of changing. Today is Primary day so of all days, today is the day to ask the candidates how they feel on this topic. It is even mor eimportant to vote for thise who will protect our children.

You see Superintendent:  of schools Thomas Brennan and your Mayor and School Board are in the works to switch schools so that K-5 will be together, 5-6th grade will be together , 7 and 8th grade will be together and then maintain the High Schools.

They are NOT taking into consideration how this will affect our children. Taking 4 middle schools and making 2 middle schools for 5-6 and 2 middle schools for 6-7 grade will cut our childrens opportunity to play sports, band, chorus and other activities in half. You will have twice as many students trying out for 1/2 as many spots as we currently have for each activity. That leaves quite a few students out in the cold instead of enjoying playing their favority instrument, sport or activity.

In addition, as virtually every other home owner in the city, we moved to a specific neighborhood so our children would be able to be in a specific school area. Living very close to Green Acres and Mclaughlin Middle school was our choice so my daughter could enjoy what that school had to offer. I do not want her bussed to an another school across the city. Even thise who call for rentals request specifc school districts. It affects all of us.

Alot of questions were posed when 6th grade was added to middle school, There is a great difference between a 6th grader and a 8th grader. I was not sure if i liked that idea and took the time to investigate the school, talk with LOTS of parents of kids and talk with teachers before being comfortable with it. One of the quotes from the last school board meeting  was 6th graders would be put back with 5th graders to" keep them young a little longer". My daughter fills me in every afternoon about what happened had school and she has very little interaction with 7th and 8th graders. Where she does interact it is in band, and it has been very positive as the students work with each other and help the 6th graders, i was very impressed about the great things  i heard about the band program and band teacher.

The other place she interacts with 7th and 8th graders is in sports, right now it is Field Hockey. I have to say that again the 7th and 8th graders have been very encouraging. The team captains being 8th graders are a postive influence in molding the younger girls into good players, teammates and good students.

So that leaves me to my conclusion, There just is not enough information coming form the school board who wants to implement this NEXT year, that is right 2012-2013 school year.  The way i see it

1. Students will face a huge shock being uprooted from their current school, current friends, current teachers and taken from an atmosphere they feel comfortable with. They will be starting over in some cases. They will face a shock, that as involved parents, we try and protect them from

2. Students will face less opportunities for activities, band, chorus and sports

3. Students will be bussed from neighborhood schools we moved to be in to across town INCREASING busing costs to the city and us citizens who may see an increase in taxes.

4. We the parents are NOT being listened to what WE want.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Today is voting day, the top 2 candidates will face off in Novemeber. Before voting today ask how the school board member feels, ask how the candidates for alderman feel, ask how the candidate for Mayor feel. Then MAKE SURE YOU VOTE. Send a message, let them know we will not letthem push an agenda ruining our childrens lifes we work so hard for.

I dont know wherte Wmur and the Union Leader is on this controversial issue, buit let them know we have an issue.....
