Good afternoon everyone. My fellow San Diegan Eric has posted some examples on how to capture Depth and Space in your photos. Take a moment to see his examples. Great post today Eric!

Seriously Simple Photography Tips

Capturing that sense of depth and space

Photographs only capture two dimensions in a three-dimensional world. That means that as a photographer, you have to capture the sense of depth and space to present to your viewers. There are many ways to do that, of which a couple include using wide angle lenses and using odd angles.

We all know that cruise ships are big, carrying many thousands of passengers and crew. Here is a picture of a cruise ship moored at the cruise ship terminal at the Embarcadero in downtown San Diego:

That picture was taken with a 28mm wide angle lens and does a great job of showing us the size of the cruise ship by getting up close and personal.

Here is a picture of a wet street:

Cars in the rain

Including the cars along the sides of the street give us a sense of space and depth.

Here is another one using cars and treest to give us that sense of space and depth:

Street, cars, and trees

Lastly, here is an example using a chess set. The first picture looks like a chess set, and that's what it is:

A quick glance says, "That's a chess set," but if we include another picture....

Chess set

....we say, "That's a big chess set!"

Make sure your pictures convey to your viewers what you want them to, what you thought when you were taking the picture. Sometimes the picture we think we took is not the same as the picture the camera took.

Thanks, Krista.  Nice examples - and particularly fun with the chess set.  We'll have to figure out how to put them in "perspective" for home & property photos.
