Community Counts

Communities networking and sharingThis Localism Contest has me thinking a lot about community. Posting everyday about our states, counties, cities, towns, businesses, neighborhoods and streets really reinforces my belief that community counts, and extends beyond our personal borders and isn't always physically local.

Gayle Rich-Boxman posted about feeling guilty for not posting and embedded a Who video. We exchanged emails and memories (shared yet separate). All of a sudden FishHawk Lake wasn't so far away. I posted about kindergarten and janeAnne in Asheville responded that she taught school there! janeAnne asked for more information after reading my story about the property onHelping hands builds cooperation Blanton Branch here in Sylva. Her buyer comes next month to look at horse property. Sheila Newton posts appealingly about Greenville, SC places and events (less than 2 hours away). So, sometime in October we are shooting for a ...well... a photo shooting day together. Tammy Lankford is a little farther away, but we can tell from our email exchanges and phone conversations that when we meet in person (and we will) there will be no lags in the conversation. Cyndi Daves is in Murphy, the next time I go to a John C Campbell Folk School festival, I'll call and see if she has time for a mini meet up.

Will Hamm posted that he broke away from work...again!...and visited San Diego. He met Russel Ray and Jim Frimmer. I'd love to do the same thing and see if photographer guru, William Johnson was available.

Mentioning everyone in the AR community that I want to meet would cause me to go over the maximum suggested number of words!

Working TogetherWhich leads me to ActiveRain staffer, Bob Stewart. He’s responsible for some of those great ActiveRain webinars and it seems he’s from Detroit too. Bob also answer questions. The more you learn, the more you question! After attending RainCamp Online and listening to Katerina Gossett discuss Statistics, comments, clicks and views - I wrote Bob to find out the difference between clicks and views! His email arrived at midnight:39!  "Views are really not worth anything. It just means that your content displayed somewhere on a page. It could mean that it was never actually seen though.....like if it was showing at the bottom of your blog page, but someone was only reading the post at the top. Ignore it really.
Clicks is what you are interested in. That means the specific URL of the blog post was loaded on a browser. That is the number you want to pay attention to as that means that someone had a specific blog post of yours loaded on their browser. Generally that number will settle around 50-100 after the first two or three days. Everything after that point is folks who are finding the post via the search engines (or the majority of the traffic after the first few days).
Clicks is what counts."

Now, I get it!

Before I leave (you'll like this Gayle!)... Flash mobs have always interested me because they really show community in action.  At the end of the day, after all ... "Community Counts".

Hey thanks, I appreciate it.  Hope you liked the video and even though I'm headed off to sleep now - I will visit your blog in the morning!

Mona - 6 degrees of separation - it's so true. You find the strangest connections you never though possible. I spoke to an Active Rain member last night who lives in Colorado, but was in Parsippany, NJ for business. Although we didn't get to meet b/c she only realized how close she was to where I live at 9:30 at night and was leaving in the morning, but she was 10 minutes from my house!

What a cute post, Mona.  And how so very COMMUNITY of you :)  One of these days I would love to see a flash mob.

Dear Mona~

FABULOUS post...goes right to the heart of the matter here at AR. ..the special connections we can make...the strength of being in this vibrant community.

I'm Suggesting it for those reasons...and I've tweeted it, too. Thank you for the time and energy you devoted to putting this post together. It is artistic, authentic, and makes me know YOU are the kind of real estate professional I would trust my referrals to!

Mona: Community does count, and when we forget that, we are the worse for it. Thanks for the video. It's been a while since I thought about the "deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pin ball". And even though my husband likes to refer to the WHO as Who's Left? I remembered the very first time I heard the song - as a high school freshman. Also, loved the guy in the suit. Have a great day in all of your communities.

Kristine, I saw that comment by Rebekah? at least I think that's who it was.  Wouldn't you have just loved a face to face.  While we wait for the face to face, I really like having a phone conversation to match voice to written words...your time is coming too!

Hi Mimi, didn't you love the guy in the suit?  There is something so magical to me about flash mobs.  I really like thinking about the clandestine meetings and rehearsals.  People working together to achieve a common good goal.  What's not to like?

janeAnne, I can't help feeling that we are on the same page about so many things.  I appreciate your words.  Not only is AR a vibrant community, but this community of western North Carolina region is also so rich and grows richer every day.  I've really seen it in the 25+ (ouch) years we've been here.

Anne, I really like thinking about the teens and twenties we all have bottled up inside of us.  How cool would it be to have all of us silvering somethings rocking out together in a concert hall.  Ha Ha, there's a visual that should warm everyone's hearts!

Love the thought and admiration reflected in this post, very fun and shows what a great impact some of our visible committed AR members have on us.  Enjoyed it!

there is a commercial on the TV - Verizon or AT&T? (not good advertising if I can't remember :) ).  I laugh but my mom gets mad every time she sees it.  It's the guy who didn't get the message that the flash mob isn't happening until 12:30.  I have tried repeatedly to explain to her what a Flash Mob is . . . she just can't grasp the concept.  But yes, I thought the guy in the suit was great.

Hello Connie,  it just doesn't get more local!

Hey Mimi, I always laugh at the guy with the slow phone.  You need to email some flash mobs to your Mom...she'd probably get a huge kick out of them.
