Is Google +1 Taking Off As Expected? Does it matter?

When Google +1 was announced, the idea was that it would soon overtake the Facebook "like," but I'm not so sure that's happening.

I see plenty of good sites - and blogs with enough comments to indicate that a variety of people enjoyed them - but they're painfully low "+" numbers.

My feeling is that we just forget to click.

Or perhaps there's a reason why we don't bother. A question

When we "like" something we're usually offered the opportunity to make a comment and share the information with our own contacts. The same with Twitter - we tweet because we think the people who follow us might enjoy what we've found.

Lately I've been trying to remember because it seems like a nice way to say "thanks" to someone who wrote what I enjoyed reading. But I wonder if it's really doing them any good?

Is it supposed to increase their ranking on Google? Does it really help with search engine optimization?  And if that's the case, will all those great sites and blogs with low numbers be penalized because people forget to click?

Is this something important? Or is it just a passing whim?

And then there's Google "circles" or whatever it is. I joined, but I'm not sure why - and I'm not sure how I'd get back there again. (Yep, totally non-techie.)

What do you think?

I'm a pc guy and a Facebook guy.  It takes me a while to change from something that I really like to something else.

Joe - That makes sense. Someday I'm going to take the time to really learn how to use Facebook. Right now I can still go there and get hopelessly lost.

I agree with Joe that it takes both businesses and consumers a while to make the switch both physically to our sites and mentally so we remember to click the +1 button.  I'm seeing more of it, but I have to say I still push like a whole lot more than +1.

Rebekah - "Like" seems like more fun, since we can often add a comment.

Well, I think this is what we thought about Facebook when it first appeared.... it all takes time to create a following. I haven't even gone there (+1) yet, and I just joined FB last year about this time! I have to "really LIKE" something to click... also, it takes so much time already to go to three email accounts, FB, Active Rain, and respond, post, comment, and find content for blogs...... enough already! I gave up Twitter because it was frustrating with so many automated "tweets" from "Twerts", that I stopped using it for my own general well-being.I don't miss it one bit....

Teri - I agree!! All these things to do and places to go can really eat up the hours. We have to make choices for our own well-being.

I don't think you can avoid Google +  I really have to LOVE something to give it a 1+ or a "like" When "likes" and "1+" becomes something you do to get a favor or something then the whole process becomes useles..

Ruthmarie - Yes, it does seem kind of useless. Instead of a real endorsement, it's more like saying "I was here."
