The Voracious Reader & A Proper Cup of Larchmont NY

When I first poked my head into the Voracious Reader, it made me wish I was a child again.  Being a book maven, this is a place I would have called my home away from home!   Today when I look at thoughtfully laid out store like this with all its nooks and crannies  – I can only smile and say there IS a viable anti-big-box book store model out there!  The store even brought to mind “The Shop Around the Corner” that Meg Ryan ran in You’ve Got Mail.

They have first books for toddlers, books for new readers, and plenty of selection through the teen years.  I noticed of a Star Wars corner – a nook with Winnie the Pooh and of course the Harry Potter series.

As if that wasn’t enough – the Voracious Reader has expanded to include a tea house (A Proper Cup) that serves a variety of teas, lemonade with mint and cold drip coffee – which is excellent.   There are also cupcakes, cookies and pastries including a selection that is   gluten-free.

Francine Lucidon is the heart and soul of the store - and she has created a true oasis where youngsters can grow and learn away from the hectic world outside.

This is one of the reason that Larchmont homes are so popular.  The type of community that surrounds the area encourages small business with  a unique perspective to flourish even in our big-box world which many think dominate suburbia.

Hi Ruthmarie - I used to have a very special bookstore - a joy to visit and get lost in for hours, plenty of comfy chairs, awesome staff that knew books well - one time I called them for a travel guide to a city I hadn't visited before - the staff member pulled all 14 books they had, described them all to me, made recommendations, and shipped me the 3 I chose, with an invoice. Amazon eventually ate my bookstore. I miss those days so much.

Hi Dick,  It sounds as if you had a gem....So far the Voracious Reader is doing well.  But I can well see how Amazon can destroy a small store.  I think that it is the specialty aspect of this store that allows it to do so well.  Remember the movie "You've Got Mail"  where Tom Hanks and his superstore trounces "the Shop Around the Corner"?   Well Amazon killed Borders - so its always a case of big fish eat small fish.  However, I would love to think that just perhaps - some of the small fish are finding a way to play in the water once again.

I love wonderful bookstores-in Chappaqua we used to have The Second Story and now it's gone-and even Borders is gone in Mt. Kisco.  I will come visit because these are precious gems-Amazon is the Voracious Monster!

Dear Ruthmarie -

THANK YOU for this wonderful mention! The slide show gives a great picture of our store. I appreciate the talent and work that went into its making.

As for online sales and Amazonians, people will always need community and indie bookstores across the country, growing in number, help provide that. By offering your support you help build your town's tax base, real estate value and create a sense of connectedness with other families.

Real life occurs in the real world, not online. Help keep yours vital by supporting Indies.

Thanks again Ruthmarie, for helping to keep Larchmont and Westchester communities vital, thriving places!

Francine

Hi Francine - This isn't my primary site - but I posted it here afterwards.   I'm glad that you found the post.  I tried to email a couple of the people who I posted local blogs about - and for some reason they bounced back.... So I was going to stop by the store early next week.

Hi Joanna - Its worth the visit and be sure to have some tea or coffee while you are there!
