Let’s Count Jack Rabbits

After those especially stressful days my wife and I have found the perfect way to unwind and relax. We have a saying at our house, “Let’s count Jack Rabbits.”  No questions asked we along with our pup Dixie hop in the truck and head for a quick off road trip up Albuquerque’s West Mesa.  Here we find Jack Rabbits along with Coyote and amazing views that go as far as the human eye allows. Instantly we’re in the Jack Rabbit counting mode. How many will we find today?  Are they young, old, do they have babies?  Can we get a photo?   As the days stress melts away we count Jack Rabbits and say thank you for Mother Nature and another day of our many blessings.

Sounds to me as if Mr. and Mrs. Q-man have more blessings than there are jackrabbits in the Q. Have a wonderful evening.

Hi Debb -

Yep you're right we are blessed and we know it.  Just some days one needs to head away from cell phones and computers and enjoy the Jack Rabbits :)

Hope you can kick back and enjoy a relaxing afternoon.

John, what a fun way to get "away from it all."   I do remember that there was a preponderance of jacks as we traveled that area.  But, they are fun!

Hi Suzanne -

Indeed Jacks abound but with the huge growth of Albuquerque they're being pushed further west.  They are so cool to watch and it's a game to see who will or will not be camera shy!

Hope you enjoy a wonderful afternoon and best regards from the Q

What a wonderful way to de-stress and unwind! Reminds me of Sunday afternoon drives with my parents when I was a kid. We always hopped in the car for a drive up into the mountains near Cloudcroft.

Hi Rose -

Glad you dropped by in the Rain today.  Yes you're very right heading out in search of Mother Nature is an awesome way to unwind and rejuvenate ones self.

Driving around up, down and all around must have been the thing to do back in the day.  I recall my folks packing all four of us kids the ole station wagon and heading out for those Sunday afternoon rides. Those were the good ole days ........

Enjoy your evening and best regards from the Q

John how fun! And your little buddy I'm sure loves it as well. He's a cutie.  We live right by the Phoenix North Moutain Preserve and we love our nature hikes every day - and somedays we have plenty of rabbits.  Today I saw so many Quail families.....all scurrying about.  Good way to start my day!

Hi Teral -

Your comment brings a good laugh.  The local Sonic here knows us by name and our pup Dixie!  They don't even bother to ask if she can have a treat now.  They know she's wiggling in anticipation as we are for our milkshakes :)  Now that's quality time!

Thanks for stopping by the Rain

Hi Roy -

Yes Jack Rabbits are quiet large.  In fact some are taller than our Mini Schnauzer we take along on our Mesa escapes.  Their ears grow to be very large and long and they're quicker than Forrest Gump when running :)

I hope you and Dolores have a restful night.

Hi Ms. Anna Banana -

Oh yes Dixie loves to go for rides in the truck and loves roaming the Mesa even more.  We have to keep a close eye on her for fear of a hungry Coyote snagging her up for a quick snack.

Up until last year we had a huge covey of Quail that grazed, pecked whatever you want to call it in our backyard.  We fed them birdseed and cornbread.  They loved it.  I think the largest covey we had was 27.  The males were so dominating and protective of their families.  They were very interesting as well as beautiful.  Good ole construction bulldozed down all the scrubs behind our home forcing the Quail to move on.  We miss them but treasure all the many photos and memories we have of them feeding as we sat on our patio enjoying their antics.

Have a great evening and best regards from the Q

Counting Jack Rabbits, huh, I guess we could count alligators instead. Those are cute photos, John. You have a sweet doggy too.

Hi Toni -

I'll take Jack Rabbits any day over a Gator!  Ouch!  LOL.... Dixie pretty much is our child and thinks she has to go where and when we do.  I hope you enjoy a great day in and out of the Rain.

Hi John,

Great pictures and their ears are really loooooooooooooong. We always counted horses and if you got a white horse, it wiped out your score. But we are mostly on freeways in California so we can't see the rabbits.

Loved the pictures and have a great weekend.

Hi Kristin -

Thanks for dropping by in the Rain this morning.  You're right Jack Rabbits have really long ears and their actually large in size too.  I've never heard of your game about counting horses and the white horse trumps all.  Oh the games we play :)

Make it a great first day of Fall and enjoy to the fullest.

Best regards from the Q

I had no idea that jackrabbits had ears like that! I've never thought about counting rabbits, but it does sound like fun, and we have a community college here that is overrun with cottontail rabbits. During the evening, it's possible to count a few hundred rabbits in just one hour.
