A day of astronomical significance…

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

A day of astronomical significance…As an aficionado of celestial observations, I take a keen interest in the physics of planetary movement, especially that of our own Earth.

Around 9:04 A.M. today, the earth’s axis will be perpendicular to the sun which means that nearly every part of the earth will experience approximately equal hours of daylight and darkness.

This semi-annual universal “evening-up” officially commences the season of Autumn. In the Northern hemisphere, the number of minutes of daylight will continue to wane each day until the winter solstice.

I often pause and wonder “where did the year go?” But my paltry little efforts are an insignificant wobble in the grand scheme of things.

The Earth will continue its ceaseless revolutions long after I am gone!

But I sure am glad that I’m aboard for the ride!

Richard: Very philosophical this morning! We are lucky to be here. I always look at the fisrts day of Fall as only 6 months until the first day of Spring! Every shortened day brings us a littler closer! Have a great day!

Wondered what that "hinky" feeling I had when I got up... it's the axis, wobbling factor of the blue and green spinning marble... not the burrito I ate that was loaded with the good stuff last night during re-runs of Law and Order ("Da Da" sound effect)

Fun info for a gloomy day in PA. Possibly this will mark the end of an incredibly long rainy season, and bring us some needed sunshine!

It is that time of year where we begin to melt into our fall & winter with the sunshine hours less.  Great information about the equal hours of light & dark.  I do enjoy the summers for the extra days which I will miss but looking forward to the more relaxed season with a fireplace lighting up the room and a cup of hot chocolate.

Richard,  I feel the same way you do and I love to see the quirks in the way our planet moves.  Right now, the shortening of the day is at its most rapid in the northern hemisphere, and the darkening gradually slows to a stop by 12/21.  Further, the days only start gettin very gradually that day (or close) and the lengthening of the day begins very gradually until 3/21, when it is at its fasest rate.

It's got nothing to do with anything, but to me its interesting.  I like your blog.

I guess summer is officially over.  It's felt like it for about 2-3 weeks, the signs have been everywhere as the summer businesses go to weekends only.  Time for Applefest!

I began to feel the "change of season" yesterday when I realized it was darker much earlier.  Thanks for the scientific explanation.

The darkness will soon descend on you in the Northeast! Time to split wood and stock the shed. THX.
