Eliminating Homelessness in Lancaster – One House at a Time!

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Elite RM423455

Eliminating homelessness in Lancaster is an important goal for many. The challenges of homelessness can be overwhelming, but small steps must be taken. The best way to do that in Lancaster is one house at a time.Eliminate Homelessness in Lancaster

Chestnut Housing Corporation was formed as an integrated auxiliary of East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church in 2010. However, the vision for this group began much earlier when persons began to dream of ways to eliminate homelessness in Lancaster. This vision came to fruition through the formation of Chestnut Housing Corporation.

639 East Chestnut Street was purchased by Chestnut Housing Corporation in 2010 and through paid and volunteer labor was rehabilitated into a wonderful home. The goal to help individuals and families avoid homelessness in Lancaster through providing affordable housing was achieved. It was exciting when the first family group moved into this property early in 2011.

Eliminate Homelessness in LancasterThis first family is now fully employed and moving into more permanent housing. It was not without its challenges, but the second chapter in the history of this endeavor will begin in October. The home will be cleaned and some minor repairs performed to open the doors to another family or set of individuals who will move towards stability.

Chestnut Housing has raised almost $73,000 through donations and grants. The generous donations of time and money are greatly appreciated. The board which includes Sue Waterfield, Marlisa Yoder-Bontrager, and Cal Yoder has set a goal to eliminate the debt balance of $20,000.

How might you help in this important endeavor?

·         Volunteer to help with the cleaning and repairs needed to prepare for the second tenant.

·         Pray or offer the best form of support and encouragement your religious tradition has to offer.

·         Donate money to Chestnut Housing Corporation.

Contact me if interested in helping in any of the above mentioned ways.

What a wonderful organization.  Can't think of anything worth worthwhile than putting deserving people in a home.

We've always had a significant homelessness problem here in San Diego, probably due to the weather. The City of San Diego just created a Homelessness Task Force to try to do something about the problem. Too bad that governments often cause more problems than they solve.

I hear you Jim. There are always unintended consequences to trying to do good. Hope the task force helps in some way.

Thanks for sharing information on this effort.  Every community needs to take action to eliminate the homeless.  There are a lot of families that need help.
