Eliminating homelessness in Lancaster is an important goal for many. The challenges of homelessness can be overwhelming, but small steps must be taken. The best way to do that in Lancaster is one house at a time.
Chestnut Housing Corporation was formed as an integrated auxiliary of East Chestnut Street Mennonite Church in 2010. However, the vision for this group began much earlier when persons began to dream of ways to eliminate homelessness in Lancaster. This vision came to fruition through the formation of Chestnut Housing Corporation.
639 East Chestnut Street was purchased by Chestnut Housing Corporation in 2010 and through paid and volunteer labor was rehabilitated into a wonderful home. The goal to help individuals and families avoid homelessness in Lancaster through providing affordable housing was achieved. It was exciting when the first family group moved into this property early in 2011.
This first family is now fully employed and moving into more permanent housing. It was not without its challenges, but the second chapter in the history of this endeavor will begin in October. The home will be cleaned and some minor repairs performed to open the doors to another family or set of individuals who will move towards stability.
Chestnut Housing has raised almost $73,000 through donations and grants. The generous donations of time and money are greatly appreciated. The board which includes Sue Waterfield, Marlisa Yoder-Bontrager, and Cal Yoder has set a goal to eliminate the debt balance of $20,000.
