How many is a trillion? A lot. One trillion pennies laid out would over almost 90,000 acres, In 2004 $2.8 trillion in
mortgages were originated, according to the Mortgage Banker's Association. In 2005 it was $2.9 trillion. 2006 is
anyone's guess - some estimates are around $2.4 trillion, which averages $200 billion per month. Is one
company funding all of this? Of course not. Are 10 companies doing $20 billion per month? Closer. 100
companies doing $2 billion each per month? Not quite. But there does seem to be somewhat of a consensus
that mortgage originations are stable, not "huge" as in the last few years but "solid".
