This is the Union Pacific Train that runs through the San Timoteo Canyon in South Redlands. Many of the locomotives have a huge American flag on them which makes it very distintive.

The first American railroads started in the 1830's from the Atlantic ports of Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Charleston, and Savannah. The railroad single-handedly had the greatest impact on the American transportation system. Trains helped to develop and connect the United States by carry shipments from the East Coast to the rest of the county. Even today, trains still are the major transport of Lumber, Steel, Chemicals, Automobiles, Coal, Grains, and Waste and they passengers. Passenger travel seems to be more popular in the Eastern part of the U.S and other parts of the world. Train vacation packages have become popular as well as some vacationers would rather see the scenic routes than the hustle and bustle of airplanes.

At one time there were over 132 railroads in the United States but now there are only 6. Transporting by railcar is still the most time and fuel efficient mode of transportation.

The trains have been running through the rural areas many years before residents moved in but now the train whistle has become a nuisance. In Loma Linda, the train arms were modernized last year and the engineers have stopped blowing the train whistles at Whittier Ave. and Beaumont Ave. I miss the whistles as it always reminded me of a fog horn in the distance.

Trains are engrained in our history. They are the subject matter in popular songs, poems, movies, rides at amusement parks, and our history books.

I have loved trains since I was a little girl. I even have a favorite train car shown below which is the logo of the Japanese company MOL (Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd.). I am a real nature lover so there is no surprise that it has a big alligator on it.

I like trains too....I love the pictures you have in your blog too!   I am always amazed at the "art work" on the trains....some of that graffitti is pretty cool!

Hi Li,

I think a lot of us have had wonderful experiences on trains. I remember riding on the Great Northern Railroad from North Dakota to California in 1960. They had 4 locomotives pulling us through the Rocky Mountains. I thought all trains were as nice as this until I got to California and got on a different train. I heard later that the Great Northern was the nicest of all the US trains at that time.  I have some great memories of that trip.

Hi Deborah,

I am glad I am not the only one who loves trains. I never mind waiting for the train to pass as I look for my alligator cars. Do not see them as much as before? Thanks for stopping and have a lovely weekend.

Kristin -- A great post about the history of trains, and how the spread of suburbs is impacting them.

Hi Chris,

I never care as I am always looking for my alligator car but if I am running late, of course that is the day it stops on the track or moves at 10 MPH. Just my luck! Thanks for stopping.
