Flower In CrackLet's face it in the business world and your personal life you will have setbacks, disappointments, frustrations, days where you did not accomplish what you wanted or to the degree you wanted, and life circumstances like tragedies, mishaps or accidents that hit you out of the blue. So,

Do You Have The Bounce Back Factor In You?

Some say you are either born with natural resilience or not. Don't know. Children seem to have it easier than adults. Some thoughts to consider with BOUNCE BACK:

  • Watch your expectations up front especially thinking you will know how others behave. When you EXPECT something out of an uncontrollable "other" like people and they don't perform you will feel hurt and bouncing back will take awhile cause you wounded YOURSELF
  • Learn to have a deaf ear or bad memory for the past for happiness now. What happened yesterday happened when? Yesterday. Those with strong elephant memories don't want to let it go. Detractors incessantly bring you down with the slightest set back you encounter and ARE NOT your supporters. Don't listen, and forget things fast. TOUGH to do with those with strong memories but you fake it to you make it CONCENTRATING on today and going forward. Pitchers in baseball, that are good, do this all the time with the last lousy outing put out of their mind with today's trip to the mound.
  • Think BOTH good and bad about an event that happened. People lacking resilience only think one way or the other. Good times, wow I feel good. Bad times, life sucks. Resilient people know about the bad but are seeing a silver lining in addition to it. They can think well it could have been worse or I don't have this problem.
  • Work harder next time. Whatever you did to stumble even with the uncontrollable, work harder to prevent it from happening again. Car wreck no seat belt. Hey you lived. NEXT time ALWAYS wear your seat belt. Poor performance, get mentally tough, practice better, study more.
  • Be grateful for what you do have and help others. No pity party after you get bummed out. Count your blessings that you do have. THAT alone should make you feel better and do some service work for others. Immediately lifting to YOU and to THEM.
  • Think lessons learned. I sometimes SWEAR the MESSES we find ourselves in life are like this HUGE blessing in disguise. WHAT lesson are we supposed to learn here? Be more careful, study harder, drive more safe, quit acting like an immature juvenile, have a softer heart, YOU are not the center of the universe, the lessons are endless..... FIND the lesson and learn it. Even a big one for all of us about love and fleeting time... LIFE IS PRECIOUS. LOVE IS AWESOME.
  • Gallows humor. Laughing in the face of death so to speak. Develop your HUMOR despite trying circumstances. It reduces tension for sure and the tension of those around you. Someone who had a leg prosthetic from an amputation in a dance contest said if she kicked real hard her leg would fly off. What a hoot that would be. That was HER saying that and it cracked everyone up.
  • Practice great physical resilience to go with your emotional and mental resilience. Eat right, sleep enough, exercise. Spending 20 minutes outside in nice weather can make all the difference in your well being for the day.
  • Do not forget to connect. Social connection is so good for our souls. Talk and laugh with people in person and on the phone and online. It will for sure bring you out of a funk. Work at getting ten or more friends.

I do believe resilience, the bounce back factor, can be more than just someone gifted at having it from birth or just easy for children. We all can bounce back as long as we don't go into a shell. With some of those ideas above

YOU CAN LIVE TO FIGHT AGAIN ANOTHER DAY.

Gary - I think you covered at all.  Staying positive and surrounding yourself with folks who support you is a great way to bounce back :)

Hi Gary, We all need to read this over and over until we have each of these points memorized. They we can custody and make them work for us as well as others  that cross our paths. It all sounds good and it is but unless we learn it, reading it over once is not enough. Well done and very salient to many of our lives.

Gary-All but #2 make sense to me. Why would you want to forget the happiness or tune it out. I would think you would want to fully embrace happiness wherever you can find it.

Petra: We all need the encouragers.

Sharon Tara: I have a tough time with the expectations too.

William: Integrating these into ourselves makes them a snap.

Sharon Lee: You have a deaf ear to detractors and FORGET the bad of the past to have HAPPINESS today and into the future. I may have wrote that sentence with some ambiguity in it. Not tuning out happiness but BY tuning out you achieve happiness.

Thank you for the clarification. I always turn a deaf ear to any detractors or if that doesn't work then out comes the bat toting V.A. It works well. Smiling

Great advice Gary.  I'm probably becoming an expert at this bounce factor stuff.  Granted, I still haven't figured out how to be happy about missing races because of a broken toe.  The most positive thought that I've been able to come up with is that at least I still have a foot.

Thanks for reminding us of the importance of being resilient.

Sharon: I fixed the sentence, thanks. You like that speak softly and carry a bat approach.

Sondra: Hope that toe gets better fast. Your thought reminds me of the man who stopped complaining about not having shoes till he met a man not having feet. Right you are. It can ALWAYS be worse.

Gary, what a great list of mantras for life.  Focusing on the positive and appreciating all the good (every cloud has a silver lining) is a great recipe for bouncing back.
