Things To Do In Murphy - Day Trip to Pigeon Forge Tennessee

pigeon forge

Every September we participate in a memorial ride over to Pigeon Forge Tennessee with our riding club.  We take this ride in memory of a fellow club member who passed away several years ago.   The ride from Murphy to Pigeon Forge is only about 80 miles and takes you through Cherokee and through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  It males a great day trip when you’re visiting the area.

This morning we started our day with no particular plans other than to hang out and enjoy the company of friends.  It wasn’t long before someone announced that the Shriner’s Parade was about to take place on the main highway out in front of our hotel.  Several of us decided to walk out and watch it.  Keep in mind that we are from a (vMountainsery) small town and a parade normally lasts about a half an hour.

Two hours later we were still standing beside the highway enjoying the festivities!  There were bands, clowns, antique cars and miniature vehicles of every size and shape - go carts, hummers, corvettes, tractors and even little semi-trucks.

The one thing that was very prominent to us was that even though the Shriners raise millions of dollars every year to provide  healthcare to children, this event was NOT about fundraising.  There were no Shriners walking with buckets, baskets or boots collecting money.  This event was strictly to entertain the public and, in turn, hopefully raise awareness about what they do for the children.

We were totally entertained for over two hours and I can say with certainty that the next time we see a Shriner on the corner collecting for their cause we will remember this day and dig deep.

Next time you’re in Murphy make time for a day trip over to Pigeon Forge.  You may not see the Shriner’s Parade but I can guarantee there are plenty of places to shop, eat and sight-see that you won’t be disappointed!

That looks like some fun event. Glad you had fun. It is great to promote such events especially if it benefits some organization.

Hi there Bill and Cyndi, we love the day trips in our area too! Pigeon is a favorite of mum and me but we try to get to the fall Rod Run when we go. There is always something going on in the area for all ages. We only had an issue with hotels when we happened upon a Vols game nearby and the Run around the same time (hotels get booked fast-for miles and miles).

Mike - It was a great parade, very interactive and entertaining.   Totally different than just watching floats go by like in the typical parade.

Carole - we live in such a great place knowing we can travel to locations like this that are so close by yet seem like worlds away!

Jacque & Larry - Fall Rod Rum was just LAST weekend.  Our girls started going with their groups of friends when the turned 17.  It is a lot of fun.  You're very right - it can be difficult to find a room if there are too many events going on.
