That's How Real We Are

FallA friend told me that he saw something cool the other day and almost started to turn around to tell me about it – but of course I wasn’t there.  He’s just so used to telling me stuff that his first urge was to turn and talk to me.

The really cool part about this – we’ve never even met in real life

Yep, this is a friend I’ve made totally through the computer and everything we’ve shared has been little letters on our computer screens, just like you’re reading here.

Sometimes it’s hard to get tone and inflection just right using nothing more than flat letters, but I think the two of us do just fine.  He and I have butted heads (hard!), whispered secrets and cracked up together.  All online.  He tamed me totally.

It proves to me yet again that our true selves can be projected online.  A guy I’ve never met in real life wanted to turn and tell me something because our writing got stuck in each other’s heads.  HE’S in my head.  This is nothing new, I’ve been doing it for years.  I’ve had penpals since I was a teenager.  We’ve gone from the written word to the computer, digital cameras, voice chat and video. To me, they are all just tools (toys) to help people far away from each other become real.

There is nothing to keep you from getting to know practically anyone in the world, if only you try.

People have said they feel like they know me when they read my blog.  The thing is, they do.  They really do.  That’s me all over the place.  (Maybe too much me sometimes, but hey, I’m all I’ve got to work with, aren’t I?)

It’s up to you how much you want to reveal of yourself online.  If you’re working on a business blog though, have at least a little “you” in it.  We’ll want to come back and hear more when we know and love you.  Maggie Dokic took me with her and hers girls to look at the stars in her blog the other day.  THAT’S what I’m talking about.  She didn’t just tell me how to get someplace, she took me with her.  (Important – “took me”“with her”.)  I got to feel like I’d been there, and that I went with and know Maggie.  Well, I do. She’s my Maggie, because these little letters on the computer helped us to get to know each other.  She's probably your Maggie, too.  Aren't we lucky?

And this morning I took some extra pictures for this friend of mine that I’ve never met, because I wanted to turn to him and ask, “Did you see that?”  Shame he wasn't there.

Once you're real, you can't become un-real again. It lasts for always.

Great post Sarah.  I know what you mean - some people just come off the "page" (or screen) and it almost seems like you are having a conversation through blogging.  I find that with your posts and I thoroughly enjoy them!

Sarah,

Very uplifting, and in this world of change it's nice to read about the good. Life is a vast adventure of meeting new people and making new friends. An endless sea of opportunity!

Thank you for the breath of fresh air.

Hi Sarah,

This is so cool, I imagine many of the people that I have come to know here are just as real in person as they are in their blog. :)

Suzanne - I imagine you as fun and energetic, and tsking me about my junk food lunches.  :o)

Ski - You're welcome!  I try to write mostly about good.  Sometimes I could do better at it ...

Kathy - You're so right, some people just feel so real they become friends in no time at all!  I like the conversational writers a lot too, and the goofy ones, and the edgy ones, and the intellectual ones .... :o)

Missy - I like that too, when I get to know someone through their posts.  I started throwing some "inappropriate" posts on MySpace.  I have four subscribers.  I feel like a success!!!  Those four readers are pretty faithful.  I think 100 would be pretty amazing.  (And I have no idea how many any of us have here!  Maybe I don't want to know.)

Jason - I'm not big about picking up the phone and calling anyone.  I've loved it anytime anyone has called me, but there are only a couple here that I can actually call without an invitation and feel like it's OK.  (Shy!!)  But there are several that I communicate with online, and they have become true friends.   If we met for real -- PARTY!!!

Sally - When you get to meet all those people -- the rest of us want to hear about it!!  Have a GREAT time!!  ... I'd love to come see you someday, too!!  :o)

Linda - Wasn't that tree a show off??  I couldn't help but take it's picture.  Everything around it was so blah, and it was all LOOK AT ME!!  I was walking with a friend (actually in a breast cancer awareness walk, and my friend is a 12 year survivor) and she pointed that tree out.  So patient -- I was taking pictures the whole way!

Ryan - I get words AND people stuck in my head!!  And yes, I think it's a good thing, too.

Sarah - I was actually shy about that at first, too, but I have spoken with a good number of AR friends on the phone.  Maybe even the friend you are alluding to in this post.  Who knows?

Tom - :o)  I like you a lot, too!  And you're welcome.  You can get to know me any time you like.

Suzanne -  Funny how that happens, huh?  :o)!!

Jason - Hmmm ... I'd bet you haven't talked to him!!  I've heard his voice, but he hasn't heard mine.  Cryptic??  It's probably not who you're thinking, but I've been tamed by a few people here.  We could play 20 questions if you want.  :oD

Excellent post.  I would rate if five if I could.  I think our true selves can come out online.  It is a shame if we don't let at least a part of it.  Who we are in our personal lives generally molds who we are in business!

Hey Sarah (sis)!

What a very pretty picture - if I didn't know better, I'd think you snuck up to New Hampshire while I was away!  ;-)

Your post is so true!  I see things that make me think of someone here, or I hear things that make me think so-and-so would love to hear that or see that.  Funny how the internet and AR has made our worlds so very different in a very short period of time, isn't it?  There certainly are friends here who have 'taken' me to places with them as well.

Just be us....
Ann

Hi Sarah, It is amazing the way in which relationships emerge through the written text.  I've had the opportunity to meet and talk with several neat people.  I'm also thinking about this on a variety of levels...there can be a downside if boundaries which should be in place are removed as well.  Still exploring the implications of that in my mind...learning about balance is important too.

My AR friends are as real as the buddies that I pal around with locally.  Amazing how well you can get to know someone through theie words.  I believe that I have more insigt into how some folks around here tick than I do people that I have physically known for years.  Crazy.  I couldn't agree more with injecting your personality into your blog.  I can read a lot of trade journals or training tips elsewhere.  I like finding out about the people behind the knowledge.  In addition to making a new set of friends, is there a better way to guage how compatible your clients will be with a referred agent?  Me thinks not!  Great story, Sarah.

Paul - I agree with you, when we write from the heart and read each other's posts, we DO know each other a little better than we might know our best friends!  Different stuff comes out in the written word.  And I would certainly read someone's blog before choosing them as an agent!!

Roberta - I've only had a chance to meet one of my AR friends so far ... but I hope to meet many more!

Lola - Believe it or not, there are things I WILL NOT write about here.  I have some boundaries, they're just pushed a little further back than most people's, I think.  I'd love to read a post by you about boundaries.  :o)

Ann - I bet parts of New Hampshire and West Virginia look a lot alike!  I love that when I see license plates from around the country, people pop into my head from AR.  :o)  And SOMEDAY Ann, you and I are going to meet up somewhere!!

Ginger - I've been meaning to write you and thank you.  :o)  You made my day a while back, you know why.  And YES who we are in real life is very much who we are at work!!  (Man, there's a blog in there ... )

Sarah - we WILL for sure, you can bet on that!  You mentioned license plates - I do the same thing, and when we travel around or when I hear news about a certain state, town, or area, I think of certain AR members from those areas.   We all do, indeed, belong to a world that gets smaller and smaller for us all the time.......................

Ann

Sarah - It's not important to me to reveal the source of this inspired blog.  It is tempting, however...and cryptic.

Sarah, how did I miss this? Shame on me.  This is another fine example of you always taking us along with you.  I am honored to have been part of this post.  Thank you.

So many of you are part of my life now.  It blows me away when I stop and think about it.
