Wrestling with the devil

not my dog Buddy. Buddy does not like wearing costumes.

The winner Raul an English Bulldog won the Columbus Dispatch's 2007 Pet Costume Contest, dressed as Henry VIII complete with wives heads (they look like Barbie Doll heads to me. ) Raul's costume really is creative.

2007 Pet Costume Contest* - Slide Show on The Columbus Dispatch website. *Edit link broken.  The link went to the Columbus Dispatch but there was no slide show.

The second prize winner, Beau, a French mastiff is wearing my dog Buddy's Devil costume or similar...probably a lot larger devil costume and Beau wears it well and as the judges noted Beau has the right expression.  This photo is from years ago and although you can not see Buddy's expression you can see Buddy did not want to dress up as a devil.

This was the best photo.

Hardly a photo that will win a dog costume contest.  It is almost impossible to photograph a dog who does not want to wear a costume.  The Humane Society would probably frown on the use of duct tape so we did NOT try it.

I thought the ferret dressed as a pirate on the front page of section D of the Columbus Dispatch today was a cat at first. I don't know personally how easy ferrets are to dress but I know I would not play dress up with a cat now. I did as a kid.  Kittens. puppies, rabbits, my younger brothers, whatever would stay still long enough.

There are pet dress up opportunities in Columbus on Sunday that benefit the Franklin County Animal Shelter and the Capital Area Humane Society.  Visit ColumbusBestBlog.com for details on those Central Ohio Halloween events.

Maureen - Took a look at the pictures..they are cute, but I would say most of the pups looked none to happy about being dress up....Thank goodness Halloween only comes once a year, so they don't have to suffer the humiliation for more than one day...I mean what would their friends say....

Dressing animals up is a little bit unnatural...  but some people love it.  Who am I too judge?   I think many of the pets had "that face", I kept wanting to say number 2 was a boxer but he's a mastiff, but that boxer, bulldog, mastiff face really, really goes well with costumes...

My www.dogster.com email says there are lots of dressed up dogs to look at.  So far I have resisted.

That poor pug looks very unhappy.

Thanks for the link Maureen.

I wonder what the dogs really think about all of this!  I saw several dogs dressed up when I went to the pet store today!  I must say they looked really cute!  Happy halloween --  woof!

Jacqueline don't you think pugs just have a face that looks that way?  Joan I guess I could just run up to the pet food store to see dressed up dogs today...

Danny Five as in five animals?  Or five kids? Or a mix of pets and kids.

Maureen, I'm glad my westie Duncan doesn't know what humiliation is. He's been dressed in everything from a clown costume to a pumpkin. He's going to be stylin' in his houndstooth coat-  as soon as it's cold enough.
