People relocating to Northern Virginia often ask what type of home they can purchase in different price ranges.  Other people who ask about this include current D.C. and Northern Virginia residents who have not been in the housing market for a while and potential investors from other parts of the country.

Northern Virginia provides a wide range of available housing in all price ranges.  Condominiums and townhomes are plentiful especially close in to Washington D.C. and these represent desirable options for many buyers who want an easy commute and less home maintenance.

Single family homes in Arlington, Alexandria, and most of Fairfax County start at around $400,000.

Combining Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia, the $400,000 to $500,000 price range represents just 9% of the available single family home inventory for sale.  In Fairfax County, which for the most part is a bit further out from Downtown D.C., this price range represents 23% of all available detached single family homes.

Here are some examples of single family homes that you can purchase in Northern Virginia for just under $500,000.

ALEXANDRIA

This 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home in the Lincolnia Hills section of Alexandria was built in 1958 and sits on a 1/3 acre corner lot.  There are hardwood floors on the main level and new berber carpeting on the lower level.

This next home in the popular Del Ray area is just minutes away from two Metro stations.  The charming home was built in 1920 and features 1,419 square feet including 4 bedrooms and 2 baths all on one level  It has a fireplace in the living room and a finished attic and is close to Old Town Alexandria.

ARLINGTON

In the Columbia Forest area of South Arlington, this 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home was completely remodeled and features an addition with a stone and stucco exterior.  12 foot ceilings and a spacious kitchen with granite counters grace this Arlington home.

This 3 bedroom 1 bathroom home is located in Arlington Heights providing an easy commute to the Pentagon or Washington D.C. and features 1,208 square feet of living space.  It was built in 1936.

FAIRFAX COUNTY

This brick split level in North Springfield with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on a large 1/3 acre landscaped lot features towering trees.  Hardwood floors throughout the home, built-in bookcases and 2 fireplaces make this home even more desirable.

Located in the Ravensworth section of Springfield near Braddock Road and 1 traffic light away from I-495 (Capital Beltway), this 4 bedroom 3 bathroom home has been completely renovated with granite counters, updated baths, an oversized deck and professional landscaping.  You can walk to the 400 acre Lake Accotink Park!

Brian - I don't want to seem to forward but would you be my "go to" guy in Va. I don't have a license there. I kind of like it over here, but I do have folks that for some reason want to live over there. Of course, when you promote the area like you are with this blog, I can begin to see a little merit to your side of the river.

The varied architecture of Northern Virginia real estate is a refreshing change from the endless frame and stucco we have in Las Vegas. It's always interesting to see values in different market areas. Suddenly our median price in the high 200's looks like a bargain!

JASON:  Thanks for commenting.  As you know your series of posts on Austin inspired me to write my own.  You'll notice a big disparity in what you can get in Northern Virginia versus the same price ranges in Texas.

BOB & CAROLIN:  The Northern Virginia area is indeed a lovely area.  I've been here for 12 years and don't have any plans to leave anytime soon.

JOHN M.:  It would be my honor to be your Northern Virginia "go to" guy.  While the mighty Potomac River may divide us, I know that in spirit we are brethren.

JOHN N.:  We do indeed have quite varied architecture from Cape Cods to Colonials and Contemporaries.  Though the bulk of our homes tend towards the single hall Colonials.  Not much stucco in these parts.  Thanks for your comments.
