Video on Green Flooring products - Robert & Julie Peoples

bamboo westchester NYI just came across this video on my Google Alerts from my friends at Floor Coverings International in Austin, TX.  They were interviewed on TV, and I think they do a nice job explaining many of the Green Flooring options.

Here in the Westchester NY/Stamford CT area, when it comes to green flooring, the following are the most popular:

cork and bamboo flooring westchester NYHard surface:

- Bamboo Flooring

- Cork flooring

Carpet

- Wool carpeting

We also sell some of the recycled nylons and hardwoods that use recycled shavings (as mentioned in the video), but most of the customers in our area who want to go green, opt for the higher end natural products rather than these greenish products.  So, more opt for wool carpets vs. partially recycled nylon carpets, or bamboo/cork flooring (or even solid hardwood flooring) vs. an engineered product).

The tricky thing about green products is there are 2 aspects: 1) how is it made? and 2) how long does it last?  Some of the recycled hardwood are green in terms of how they are made (i.e. there is less waste), but the ironic thing is that solid hardwood will last hundreds of years as you can refinish it many time.  So sometimes, you really need to think about short-term vs. long-term usage.  Ask a flooring expert from Floor Coverings International, and we'll help you sort through green flooring options.

Debbie, I'm not to the flooring stage yet (I don't have interior walls yet) but I sure appreciate all the excellent advice. Knowing that we have faced flooding problems over the years I am curious what your #1 pick would be for a basement, cement floor, that we plan on making a family room. I'd love to carpet but once you have removed carpet that has been destroyed by dirty flood or sewage water you get real gun shy of putting down carpet again.

Excellent consumer flooring information...it's easy to get lost in all the options.  The video is a good compliment as well.  Well done Debbie.

Deb, great blog....I wasn't aware of all the options, and I imagine for the consumers looking to go green, you will capture their imagination.

Debbie - You are so right about the green flooring being a good option for not wasting, but the better option is to buy something and keep it forever, like hardwood.

By the way, happy belated birthday!!!!  I didn't know.   Let's meet sometime again...

Hi Debbie--great video and very good information.  My husband and I are debating new floors in our home and it's nice to consider all the options.

Bob - Go for something waterproof, for sure.  It depends on if basement is leve and smooth.  Tile is most expensive option, and if your floor is uneven, it will be very expensive.  Lately, after al the hurricanes and flooring here, I've been doing a lot of rubber gym flooring and luxury vinyl that looks like hardwood (Karndean or Amtico, as an example).  You can always put area rugs on top. (I know these aren't green products, but they will survive flooding.

Debra - Thx so much.  I'm so glad to hear that.

Anita - yes, it is.  Glad you like the video.

Ellen - Thx.  Yes, there is no one size fits all.

Dagny - Yes, that is another reason that I'm such a big fan of hardwood - it lasts for generations and sometimes centuries.  Yes, let's do that.  Thank you for the birthday wishes.

Janet - Oh good, I'm glad this will help.

I saw very little green in that whole video!  How can brown flooring or white wool be called green?

Oh, you mean...

Sorry.

Debbie,

Hardwood floors are timeless!

My sister-in-law owns a flooring store and she just showed me ceramic tile that looks like hardwood! Pretty cool!

Have a great Sunday!
