Trick or Treat Stolen away from local Children in Manchester NH - Who is the Grinch of Halloween?

The Manchester NH police chief David Mara announced "Trick or Treat" will be held on Halloween Monday Oct. 31, 2011 from 6 to 8pm here in Manchester. Parents of young children are in an uproar. A tradition for young children has been looked over without even considering the consequences.

Trick or treat was held the Sunday before Halloween from 1 to 4pm every year since i can remember. Last year the Chief upset many parents by moving it to Night time. For me alone we went from having 50-60 kids to half of that. This year not only as he angered... but he has taken away a local tradition. Local Moms were in tears as they discussed the move. "Halloween although enjoyed by the young, teens and adults is a large part of a childs life" touted one Mom. 'The police chief has stolen away my sons trick or treat " said another. Children going door to door in the local neighborhood is always part of Halloween. "You have taken that tradition and made it unsafe for virtually every child" said a neighborhood dad. Most neighborhoods do not have sidewalks or are not well lit. Most parent of young children debated the age that children should stop trick or treating, most were saying 12 or 13. Most parents agree they will miss the parade of young children, some being pulled in wagions by their parents, meeting the neighbors and getting their treats. 'What are we suppose dto do now, yake them by car, they get out and run to the door , get their candy and run back to the car" spouted one dad. Most agreed they would only bring them to the immediate houses around their own house for safety.

Chief Mara has done a fantastic job for our city, however when the Union Leader quoted him as saying "everyone wants it on Halloween night" Chief Mara i do not know who everyone is, but you obviously didnt go to the right places to ask.... you should have asked the parents... and children would have their trick or treat back. Surronding towns have always held trick or treat on halloween and at night but we are not like every town. We live in a world that is not as safe as it was when we were kids. Some times it is best to leave well enough alone. No one was complaining on a Sunny Sunday afternoon with the people who enjoy Halloween the most, the children laughing, playing and trick or treating in a safe manner and safe environment.

AN UPDATE DATED NOV. 1, 2011

Halloween was a bitter dissappointment. We saw 2/3 less children as we did 2 years ago when it was during the day.  Halloween is for the children, please give them back their Trick or Treat on a safe and sunny Sunday afternoon...

Yes it is on a school night and a work day for most parents who are just barely home by 6, get dinner ready and do you think the teachers will not give any homework becuase it is trick or treat? My daughter averages 60-90 minutes a day of homework... They definately took teh fun out of trick or treat this year for the kids and the parents. Thanks for your comment
