The Emotions of a Short Sale...

There are many very informative posts here on Activerain about the short sale process.  I won't even attempt to add my two cents to the delicate balance of how to get through a successfull short sale.  Instead,  I'd like to address a side of the short sale that seems to get lost in the mess sometimes....

Once upon a time there was a family that had finally reached their dream of owning their very own home.  They left settlement with their keys and headed to their home and began making plans.  Little Robin had decided that her room would be hot pink and be decorated with ladybugs- Brandon picked bright red for his room and had been saving all the Phillies posters that he wanted on his walls.  Mom and Dad were busily making plans to freshen up the kitchen.  Life was good.

      Until it wasn't.

Two days before the one year aniversary of  Mr. and Mrs. New Homeowner and family's being in their home, Dad got word that his job was being terminated at the end of the month.  Mom's position at her job had recently been downsized, so they didn't have her income to fall back on.  Since there was no health insurance at dad's job, Mom had added the family on her company's policy- but since her job had fallen through a few months back- they were purchasing health insurance for the family at a whopping $750 a month.  How could they keep all these "balls in the air?"  Answer was: something had to go unpaid.

And that  is just how easily and quickly a happy family's dreams can begin to unravel.  This family could be your neighbor.  This family could be YOU.    The sadness and stress that follows this scenario is unimaginable.

That is why we, as Realtors must always and at ALL times remember that these are people- families....that are going through this process.  It is not just a bank taking back a property.  It is children having to move out of their bedrooms that they pain-stakingly made their own.  It is mothers and fathers spending sleepless nights worrying about how they can come out of this with any hope for a future.  Please, PLEASE my colleagues, I reiterate....be kind in these situations and remember: these people have feelings.  That should be kept in the front of your thoughts always.  People then business.

Hi Faith,

That is the ugly truth about short sales.  I typically find it sad to walk through these homes.  They show the telltale signs of the change in fortune and heartache that accompanies it.  Suggest.
