Walmart with a Food Focus Set for South Jefferson County

A new-style Walmart Neighborhood Market with a focus on food is scheduled to open by the end of next year in South Jefferson County.

Walmart's senior manager of public affairs and government relations, Josh Phair, announced the news, saying there are about 200 of the new neighborhood-style stores across the country.

The proposed Jeffco store will be taking over the spot previously filled by Albertsons and then SmartCo in the Columbine Valley Shopping Center at 3615 W. Bowles Avenue in Littleton.

The store is expected to fill about 43,000 square feet. According to Josh, "It'll be very focused on grocery, fresh options particularly, for customers, so it'll be produce, meat and dairy. There will be a frozen section as well as dry goods and sort of your staple groceries, health and beauty products, a pharmacy, deli, bakery. Very grocery focused with some general merchandise that we would sell in our typical larger format stores. We hear from our customers in all of our stores that they want convenient access to groceries, particularly, and a lot of products we'll be offering at this store are more of the convenience items that people pick up every day.

Phair said a little more than 100 employees will be hired for the store, with a hiring center probably being announced around the middle of the year. "We expect to start construction later this year, with an opening int he fall of 2012."

This is great news for the residents in the area who have really been without a convenient grocery store for some time. I know our brother, who lives in the Grant Ranch neighborhood, is thrilled.
