I recently finished the book What It Like to Go to War. What an education. I am not in favor of any of the wars we are currently waging, but no one cares what I think.
This book is about Viet Nam and the hell that our soldiers went through, and then their tough reintegration into society. Basically, a society that didn't want to see them, hear them or think about them.
Many had turned to drugs, drinking and sex to numb their feelings about what they saw, what they had to do and how it changed them.
If you have loved ones who had to endure soldiering in Viet Nam, or even now, I would encourage you to read this book. It's not easy and some of it might make you ill, but. if you want to identify with our soldiers, this is a very important read. The author is Karl Marlantes who also wrote Matterhorn, which has been described as one of the most authentic documents to come out of the Viet Nam era.
If you have read either of these works, I encourage you to comment. If you have not, please at least try to read some of his work. It is very enlightening.
