SUSAN B KOMEN RACE FOR THE CURE ~ HOUSTON ~ OCT. 1, 2011

Race for the Cure

This Saturday, October 1, 2011 the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure will once again grace the downtown Houston area with a sea of pink passion.  Beginning at the Sam Houston Park and going down the familiar Allen Parkway and back, over 30,000 participants will take the streets for this worthy cause.

I have participated in this event every year and am always moved seeing the signs on backs with those who they are running in memory for or in honor of.  It is great seeing so many people participating in such a great cause and out exercising.

The schedule for the event is as follows:

6:00 to 7:30 am – Race Day Walk-in Registration
7:45 am – Opening Ceremonies and Memorial Birds Release
8:00 am – Family Walk/Kids K
8:20 am – 5K Timed Competitive Run
8:30 am – 5K Non-Competitive Run
8:35 am – 5K Walk
9:15 am – Runners Award Ceremony
10:00 am – Survivor Celebration

It is not too late to register.  Go to the link above for all the information that you will need to register, donate and get the specifics on parking and race day details.

See you all bright and early Saturday morning in your PINK running gear!

I was a team captain for Relay for Life this year. It was my first year with this event. It was very emotional to see how cancer had touched so many lives...people of all ages. The opening ceremony featured survivors and their care givers. This made me cry. I'll be doing the event again next year.

I noticed that pictures on you last couple of blogs do not show up as picture, just a box with I guess file name. I have no clue how to fix it, I thought it' my computer but on your previous blogs pictures look normal. I hope you will find a solution.

Look like I'm the only guy to speak about this.  My wife had a spot on her breast a couple of years ago turned out not to be cancerous.  Don't forget to take some photos have a good day

This event is always so large, at least in our area. Im sure its just as large (or bigger) in Houston.

I just went in and corrected my pictures.  Had a little AR glitch there but all is well now.  Thanks Anna for letting me know.  This event is huge so getting there early in order to park and get to the starting line is important.  The key is knowing it will be crowded and just not allowing it to upset you or ruin the reason why you are participating.

Paula, My mother was a breast cancer survivor long before the Komen Foundation started their wonderful work.  Your strifing spirit, the one that drove your survival, is the spirit I have come to know and be inspired by in the year plus we have known each other here on Active Rain.  Ride on Lady!

Larry, thank you so much for the sweet words.  So much has been accomplished through organizations such as this one.  I am sure that your mother was a fighter and it most likely shaped your life in a profound way.  We all get tested in life and I have learned to deal with it as it comes without allowing it to defeat your spirit and rob you of your joy.  Enjoy your weekend.
