Preparing your Home for Winter
Have you noticed the crispness in the air lately? Friday was the first day of Fall and the days are getting shorter! It's time to start working on getting your home ready for
Winter. Here are a few easy things that you need to look at and consider before Old Man Winter arrives!
Caulk is like weatherstripping in a tube. Check the caulk around all the windows and doors. You don't want there to be any gaps. You should also look at the other transition places like where the masonry joins the siding or where vents or other objects protrude from the walls. You want all these places to be tight.
Speaking of Weatherstripping. Check the weather stripping around all exterior doors. This is one of the largest sources of heating loss. If it's torn or missing, you'll want to replace the entire piece. Adhesive-backed foam pads are easy to install for this purpose.

Older windows often require weatherstripping to keep drafts out.
If you like to have woodburning fires in the winter. Now would be a good time to call a chimney sweep before they get really busy.
This is also a good time to check the insulation in your attic and crawl space. You can
purchase loose-fill to beef up what's already there. You can also have it professionally blown in.
Your yard may or may not have taken a beating with our hot summer this year. Now is a great time to plant trees and aerate and over seed the lawn. Aerating promotes healthy growth and over-seeding fills in those places that are bare.
Once everything's done, you can relax and enjoy the winter months!

Great tips for those in the cooler climates... we are still registering over 100* here in the Coachella Valley-- and mostly just need to keep the bar and fridge stocked up for our northern visitors! Kathy
HI Connie,
what do you mean prepare for winter, we do not do winter here, just a little (or a lot) extra rain, all kidding aside, great tips to stay safe and comfy in the good home, thanks for sharing
Connie, I love to caulk....and I love putting weather-stripping on around my doors. It makes me happy to know that I am saving $$$$$.
Hi Connie. Thank Goodness our winters are not as cold as yours, since we hardly ever get any snow. Thanks for sharing these great tips for getting ready for winter. i need to do some weather stripping myself.
I am so not ready, Connie.
Connie, our temperatures are still pretty much up there but we do notice the shorter days, i.e. the sunsets are earlier in the evening now!
William - I don't know where this year has gone to!!!
Chris -How many months of winter do you have????
Kathy - We're going from 60s to 80s. Typical Fall weather.
Peter and LInda - we get a lot of rain too usually. But last year we got tons of snow.
Suzanne - You are too funny! I wouldn't know where to begin!
Jerry - we really don't get a lot of snow either, but it can get mighty cold here during the winter. I think wet cold, from the rain, is worse than snow anyway!
Chris - Me either!! I"m hoping the fall really stretches into December this year!
Silvia - You should be warm for quite some time still!
Mike and a couple of our neighbors rented the equipment to blow in extra attic insulation back in May. Power bills were lower this summer and it was HOT! Hope we continue to see savings through the winter months as well.
Ann - We replaced our windows and can really tell the difference. I want to check our insulation too.
I went shoppiing last week and what did I see .... Christmas decorations - Yikes. Winter IS coming and we can't stop, This is a great list of tips to get ready for it.
