Traveling through Oakdale California, I took this picture in the area once called Dentville and Knights Ferry.  There is even a wooden covered bridge that some say was designed by U.S. Grant who was a brother-in-law of the Dent Brothers.

Now it is an amazing drive through a rolling chaparral meadow that sometimes breaks to a dry plain with rock outcroppings. That is seem through most of the foot hills throughout California.

Knights Ferry

When I drive, I like to think about what it would have been like crossing this mass open spaces in the wild west...  On a horse, in a wagon, on foot...

Knights Ferry

So I try to take pictures to remind me of the great trips, so I can always come back to the posts and remember!

Hi Chris, very interesting pictures.  Like you, I also find myself wondering what it would have been like to travel through areas such as yours back when the West was first being settled.

There are places on California's landscape that seem unchanged from the beginning of time.  Sometimes when things get a little hectic in my sidewalks-curbs-gutters world, I like to escape to places like those in your pictures, and reconnect with the basics.

Hello Chris, I use to live up there in Groveland, CA. We had a home in Pine Mountain Lake, a fly in community. I passed by these locations on a regular basis. We worked down in the Bay Area during the week for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories and stayed on our 37' tri-cabin trawler to then fly home for the weekends. Many times David would fly and I would drive with the puppies. I love the shots!

Wow-- you really were in the middle of pioneer country.  Great pics.  Imagine trying to farm that rocky field.
