HGTV named the Germantown Neighborhood one of the five great neighborhoods in Louisville, Kentucky in 2009, and this area certainly is fantastic! This community has become a magnet for younger artistic folks because of its affordable housing, eclectic atmosphere, the close proximity to downtown, and all the exciting hotspots of Louisville.

There is a saying that there is a Catholic church and bar within walking distance of every Germantown home! The neighborhood is bounded by Barrett Avenue, Eastern Parkway, and the South Fork of Beargrass Creek. Being in close proximity to the creek, Germantown was nicknamed “Frogtown” in the 1870’s because of flooding problems. Eventually, Beargrass Creek was routed into a concrete canal and the flooding problems were resolved.

The largest collection of shotgun homes in Louisville are found in Germantown. In fact, Louisville now boasts the largest number of shotgun homes in the country after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina destroyed the New Orleans shotgun home collection. The homes in Germantown have attracted many young professionals and first time home buyers to the area because they are very affordable and many of them feature unique architecture and charm. A number of homes in Germantown have been renovated or ‘flipped,’ offering new and modern conveniences but keeping the vintage character. Many families in Germantown have been in the neighborhood for generations.

This fun, quirky neighborhood will welcome new residents with open arms. If you are looking for a community full of history and fun, consider moving to the Germantown neighborhood!
