Albuquerque’s Secret Aspen Grove
Several years ago my wife and I accidentally stumbled across a trail less taken called North Sandia Crest. It has now become a favorite fall hike as it hides a brilliant grove of Aspens not a common sight found around Albuquerque. This is a moderate hike with awesome views as far as the human eye allows. It’s well worth the effort and heavy breathing the thin air at 10,678 feet brings. The North Sandia Crest hike travels along the Sandia Mountain rim and then dips into the forest making for a day of season changing zones and layered clothes. Once the Aspen grove is spotted we sit on the warm rocks to enjoy the stillness and beauty of the large Aspens showing off their golden fall atire. This is a perfect oppurtunity to munch on a packed lunch and rest up for the uphill hike out. It’s hard to leave this secluded area that holds such great desert beauty. As this is one of Albuquerque’s best kept secrests let’s keep the North Sandia Crest hike between us. Who knows maybe we’ll cross paths along the North Sandia Crest.
