Albuquerque’s Secret Aspen Grove

Albuquerque’s Secret Aspen Grove

Several years ago my wife and I accidentally stumbled across a trail less taken called North Sandia Crest.  It has now become a favorite fall hike as it hides a brilliant grove of Aspens not a common sight found around Albuquerque.  This is a moderate hike with awesome views as far as the human eye allows.  It’s well worth the effort and heavy breathing the thin air at 10,678 feet brings. The North Sandia Crest  hike travels along the Sandia Mountain rim and then dips into the forest making for a day of season changing zones and layered clothes.  Once the Aspen grove is spotted we sit on the warm rocks to enjoy the stillness and beauty of the large Aspens showing off their golden fall atire.  This is a perfect oppurtunity to munch on a packed lunch and rest up for the uphill hike out.  It’s hard to leave this secluded area that holds such great desert beauty.  As this is one of Albuquerque’s best kept secrests let’s keep the North Sandia Crest hike between us. Who knows maybe we’ll cross paths along the North Sandia Crest.

Hi Joni -

Yep you wouldn't regret putting hiking around Albuquerque on your To Do List.  It's really a cool place for all types of adventures.  The wife and cloud shot was probably a once in a lifetime shot. We thought it turned out pretty cool.  Pics never do justice to the beauty that surrounds us but they give you a general idea of life in Albuquerque.

Make it a great evening ~ Regard from The Q

Hey Qman-those are some striking photos. Are those trees always yellowish or is autumn happening at that altitude now?

Hey Marco -

The Aspen leaves are green until early fall.  Then they turn golden in late September or early October depending on the low moisture, cool temperatures and early fall.  The temperature at the top where we were is about 20-25º cooler than in the foothills of Albuquerque and the Metro areas and the wind is always blowing at the top.  Some years we wear long john's and ear warmers others we peel down to shorts and tee shirts. It just all depends on Mother Natures attitude.

Glad you dropped by as always great to see you in the Rain.

Hi Roy -

Thanks for dropping by in the Rain.  Good to see you this evening.  Indeed you and Mrs. Dolores should put Albuquerque on your list of things to do.  Who knows you might like it so well you might just end up staying.  Stranger things have happened.  Have a great evening.

Best regards from The Q

Nothing better than a fall hike into such beauty. Well thats wrong as there's nothing like a hike anytime. I've hiked for years though not lately and even hiked the entire 184.5 miles of the C&O canal that runs from Washington Dc to Cumberland in Western MD. Every season was beautiful. Wonderful photos.

Hi Martha -

Holy Smokes... You are a gal on the go to hike 184.5!!!!  By any chance did you have a clicker telling you how many steps you took?  Ah but then again we hike to be hiking, enjoying nature and solitude if we're lucky.  Well now that you've put me to shame I suppose I won't be posting anymore hiking adventures...LOL.

Glad you dropped by and hope to see you again soon in the Rain.

John, those are stunning. You live in a beautiful area. What a day for the two of you. I love the photo of your wife holding up the clouds....we use to go to June Lake in the fall to photograph the Aspens. I love to hear the wind in the trees. Well done John....

Hi Jeanean -

Yes the Albuquerque area is actually quiet beautiful.  We didn't photo-shop that wife and cloud photo. It just turned out perfect.  Thought it was too cool not  to share.  Aspens are rare in the Albuquerque area so finding this grove was quiet the treat.

Make it a great day in all you do.

Hi Toni

Good to see you in the Rain this morning!  We were thrilled that picture turned out so well.  What the photo doesn't show is how close to the edge of the cliff my wife was standing with 10,600 + drop.  I think her knees were knocking...LOL.

Make it a great day!

Hi Belinda -

Aspens in Albuquerque is not the normal but high on the Sandia Mountain we spotted this beautiful grove while hiking.  Talk about a rush we were thrilled and now make it a point to head up and across the Sandia to find the grove in all her beautiful golden glow.

Make it a great day from The Q
