Do you have more books piled up in your house than you have shelves to store them on? Yea, me too. And while I haven't found a solution for the existing problem (I can't seem to part with any of them) I do have a solution for preventing the problem from getting any worse... taking advantage of the library!
Champaign and Urbana each have their own libraries, and both are members of the Illinois Heartland Library System. What this means is, if your local library doesn't have the book you want, you can check it out from any of the other libraries belonging to this system. Simply request the book online or in person and they'll deliver the book to the library nearest to you to be picked up!
First, you'll need to have a library card, so if you don't have one yet, just drop by the library located in the city in which you reside, bring a proof of your residency, and they'll issue a card to you for free. Then start checking out books, movies, CDs and more! All for free!
The new Champaign Public Library was finished in 2008 and the building incorporates plenty of seating areas, meeting rooms, lots of natural light and technology such as the self checkout feature. It's open 7 days a week.
The Urbana Free Library was originally built in 1918 with expansions and renovation in 1975 and 2005. This library also has reading areas and features a used book shop to help support the library. It, too, is open daily.
Take advantage of the library, get your fill of books and enjoy both the space and money saved. Happy reading!
