The Texas Association of School Administrators has selected the Lubbock Independent School District Board of Trustees as one of five finalists for the Texas Outstanding School Board award.
The association will recognize the Lubbock board as an Honor School Board at the state convention in Austin on Sept. 30.
“I am very proud of the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees for being selected for this prestigious statewide honor. It is well deserved,” said LISD Superintendent Karen Garza.
A statewide selection committee of nine Texas school superintendents chose the Honor School boards from nine regional finalists. The committee will conduct interviews with the finalists at the convention before choosing the outstanding board.
The Lubbock school board received accolades for improving student and teacher standards and for creating a method to achieve those standards, said Jenny LaCoste-Caputo communications director for the association.
Other accomplishments drawing attention of the selection committee: innovation in classrooms and firm decisions about school district operations.
“With the LISD being in the bottom third of the state in terms of state funding, coupled with the funding cuts from the state, we were faced very difficult financial decisions. This board consistently demonstrated its focus on doing what is best for our students, despite potential political ramifications,” Garza said.
School board president James Arnold said the Honor School Board designation rewards the school district’s ability to cope with difficult issues equitably.
“Our board works hard to deal with complex issues that could potentially be divisive. We may not always agree on the issues, but we work through them, respect each other and move forward,” Arnold said.
Others slated to receive the honor include Barbers Hill, Copperas Cove, Denton and Ysleta independent school districts.
