I'm overwhelmed with social media! How much time should I spend on it?

Okay folks, I know we all fee the pain sometimes of being overwhelmed. This has been a tough month as I have added Twitter and Google+  It's important to be connected, however, so I was searchign through recent blogs on social networking time management. Bryan put this out there so I will have to find some time to link linkedin to twitter, facebook, etc. to save a little time.

Here's what Bryan has to say!

If you're like most people you're hit with notes and requests from Facebook, LinkedIn, and other sites to connect with people, share stories, and hopefully generate some business.  Tons of people are offering advice on what to do and how to do it.  What I find even more important is "How often to do it?"  A few minutes per days and a few time-saving strategies can make the process of maintaining an active social network easy.

Why is it important to stay active on social networks?  Simple, presence.  People need to see that you're always there.  That's how you get more followers, subscribers, and leads.  If you're available, they'll send messages, tweets, etc back.  If you only use the sites and tools a couple of times a week, you're wasting your time.  The bottom line is:

Social media every day or no way

Let's talk about making the proces of communicating easier.  First, let's assume you have accounts on the following networks:

  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Google+
  • Plaxo
  • Twitter
  • Klout
  • YouTube

Configure LinkedIn to use Twitter.  That's done by going to the "More" link on the main menu, then clicking "Get more applications" and then clicking to add the Twitter applet.  Once that's installed, every tweet you post will automatically get fed to your LinkedIn account.  You'll also want to install "BlogLink" which connects your blog to LinkedIn as well.  Automation saves time.

Configure Twitter to publish to Facebook.  Hopefully you've set up a Facebook Place that you use for business purposes.  You then need to install RSS Grafitti to feed your Tweets to that page (not your personal page).  Don't use the Facebook Twitter application - it won't work right.  The app can be found at www.facebook.com/RSS.Graffitti.  Set it up to publish your Twitter RSS feed to to the business page.  Your Twitter RSS feed is http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/user_timeline.rss?screen_name=xxxxx.  Replace "xxxxx" with your user name.

Allocate social media time.  I take about 60-90 minutes per day to run through my social media routine.  Here's what I do:

  • Read the news (20-30 minutes) - Use social media links on each article to Tweet it.  It will automatically go elsewhere.  Send 2-4 tweets per day and it only takes a few minutes.
  • Reply to Tweets - If you see a tweet that's interesting, reply to it.  The more replies, the more active your network.  Try to talk at least once with everyone who follows you.
  • Comment on Activerain (15-20 minutes) - Again, building your network by communicating.
  • Write a blog article (15-30 minutes) - The article will be more content for your social network.  The more the better.

Klout will take care of itself so there's no need to spend time on it.  You can give a +K to people who you influence but otherwise it's not a time consuming site.  I'm still not convinced Google+ is worth my time so I don't have anything to suggest except that you should connect your Twitter account to it and feed articles.

Cathy... it's all about your goals, your market plan, and the type of buyers and sellers you are trying to attract.  I am not sure very many good and well-qualified buyers and sellers can be had from most of those "social media" venues you mentioned.

That is one of the several reasons why I steer clear of almost all of them.  Low quality.
