I noticed a story in the Frederick MD Post this morning mentioning that the Governor of Maryland Martin O'Malley has signed into law that beginning this Saturday ( 10/1/2011) it will be illegal to read text messages while operating a vehicle. So time to put the cell phones down while driving in MD ( and many other States and DC as well). Safety is more important. I saw a version of this bumper sticker the other day: " Honk if you love Jesus- Text if you want to meet him"

You can download the informational flier for the new law at www.roads.maryland.gov "The law is effective whether the vehicle is in motion or not on the travel portion of the road." " Texting while driving is a primary offense for all drivers, punishable by a maximum fine of $500.00 and one point on the driving record."

Love that, that is funny.  I wish they would make that a law here, awww but Governor Perry decided it was ok to drive and read texts.

It should be illegal to text ...write..read...drink...eat....multi-tasking and driving is not safe for anyone.

Most people cannot safely talk or place a call on a cell phone. Texting or reading text while driving is ridiculous! Enjoy your day!

I think most states are starting to adopt this type of legislation.  The risk is too great to be texting while driving.  Accidents happen when the driver is distracted for just a minute.  Even changing the radio station, or CD.

It looks like texing and driving at the same time will be illegal in most of the states sometime in the future.

In the same manor as having to wear seat belts.

#1 Suzanne- I think more and more states will eventually make it illegal. The bill passed the Senate 36 - 10 and The House of Delagates with a 115-23 majority vote. So looks like most elected officials are in favor of safety on the roads.

#2 Sally and David- Very true- i agree.

#3 Wayne- You're right. One of my neighbors recently ran off the road, hit a bank, and totaled his car because he was distracted by texting. It's a common and dangerous problem.

#4 Kathy- I agree- even a one second destraction can be the difference between life and death.

#5 James- I hope you're right.

My brother-in-law wrecked his car while texting and driving.  Guess what?  He still texts and drives.

"...text if you want to meet him" is a great bumper sticker. This is such good information to get out to everyone.

It's illegal in CA too.... but that doesn't seem to stop people from doing it!  When you see a car swerving, driving slow, and the driver looking down, you can bet it's a TEXT MESSAGE.
