Penn State vs. Ohio State and our visit to State College, PA

We are in State College, Pennsylvania for the Ohio State vs. Penn State Big Ten football matchup. Ohio State is ranked number one in the country for College Football and Penn State is ranked number twenty-five. We arrived late Thursday after leaving New Hampshire around 9:45 AM and arrived at Penn State about 5:15 PM. We are staying with friends of ours who are big Penn State football fans and they invited us down for the festivities. We are camped out in a huge field across from the stadium. There are roughly seven hundred campers around us and it is “PARTY CITY”.

Beaver StadiumIt has been a great sports week as our beloved Boston Red Sox have won the first three games of The World Series and the Boston College football team is ranked number two in the country defeated Virginia Tech. I can’t believe Boston College pulled that game out as they were down 10-0 with less than 3 minutes left in the game. I guess I could say Virginia Tech blew the game as they went into a prevent defense and let Boston College march down the field and score a touchdown. Then when BC kicked off they kicked it onside and BC recovered the ball and marched in again to score the winning touchdown and defeat VT 14-10 what a thrilling victory.

The atmosphere here in State College, PA is infectious as all you can see is everyone wearing their Penn State colors of blue and white and every once in awhile you will see a little red and grey for Ohio State. I wore my # 54 New England Patriots shirt of Tedy Bruschi one day and my 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series pull over sweatshirt. I got a lot of high 5's and compliments wearing that sweatshirt as we walked around the field we were camping at.

Jay and Joe PaternoHere I am standing in front of Beaver Stadium where Penn State plays. This is a statue of Joe Paterno that they have built in front of the stadium in his honor. He has been Penn State’s head coach for 41 years and he is an icon there. We also drove by his house which is a modest contemporary style home in a nice neighborhood.  It is nothing over extravagant as it is just an ordinary home. As a kid I used to root for Penn State but this is my second college football game I have ever attended. Along time ago I went to a Minnesota Golden Gopher game and they were crushed that game but I can’t remember who they played.

Last night was an awesome night as the student body and most of the regular fans and alumni were wearing white and they call it “a white out”. Penn State took the lead early and the fans started cheering so loud and the stands were actually moving from the pounding of everyone's feet. The stadium was deafening. The noise and ruckus was an experience we have never seen before and I felt like a kid again. The announced attendance was just over 110,000.

Go Penn State was our cheer. If they had beaten Ohio State then just maybe the Boston College Eagles would have catapulted to number one in the country.

Penn State got mauled as Ohio State was just too much for Penn State to handle. Penn State couldn't play defense and Ohio State did a great job at scoring at will as they defeated Penn State 37-17 .

Hi Jay - great pictures with this wonderfully written post!  What a great time it sounds like you both had!  We watched that game on TV, couldn't get the FSU game that my dad attended last night.  Go figure - here in Florida and we couldn't get that game on TV at all.

Pats won BIG time today, and the Red Sox are winning right now, too!

Ann, a little weird that you couldn't get the FSU game in Fla. doesn't make sense.

Sure has been a wonderful day here in New England.

Jay -- what a day in Boston!  I was hoping the PSU would show up beat Ohio State so that the BCS would be in total disarray.  Its a great place to play football --I have had the privilege of playing there.

What a great thing to do, and I love the photos. Naturally people here were very happy with the outcome! And you must be beaming at the Red Sox results today. Loved your description of the 'white out' -- Penn fans are dedicated and college ball to me is more exciting than pro. Don't know if you will argue with me on that one!

Aziz, I knew you played college ball but I can't remeber what team and year you played. We really enjoyed our time down there and we just may go to the Michigan game there next year.

Carole, you are absolutely correct on that college ball is by far more exciting than the pros even in basketball. We thought of you as we knew we weren't too far from Cleveland.

I know this is an older post but i love heaing what people have to say about our town, State College and their experience while they were here.

I am so glad that you enjoyed your trip to State College.  Our home town is beautiful and your pictures definatly did the Stadium justice.  They don't call us "Happy Valley" for nothing.  You should have seen the line of students camped out in "Paterno-ville" waiting to get the best seats in the student section.  They were there all week missing classes or taking turn standing in line with their friends.  The team is great and definatly appreciate the support.  Even Joe Pa and his wife brought them pizza for dinner one evening.  If you are ever in the area again you should stop by some of the local Real Estate Offices.  I've heard that Prudential First Choice Realty is a good one. :)  I hope you come back to the area some day and bring a friend.  There is always lots to do around town.
