This fellow lives in the Topeka Zoo in the giraffes' little habitat. It sort of reminded me of the part in Seabiscuit where they put a monkey in his stable to keep him company. The bird and the giraffes seem to happily coexist in the large mammals section, and I think this is a "companion bird", but I completely clueless about what it is. The poof on the head reminds me of a poodle.
I am not a bird expert, but it is on the tip of my tongue and I can't seem to get it out.
I don't have the slightest clue... eagerly waiting for the right response though!
Have no idea what he is, but he certainly is beautiful. Almost looks like some kind of Crane.
The clue is that it was living with the giraffes at the zoo Patricia. Can't you read the band?
I do think it is an African Crowned Crane. If you google there are similar photos! None are as pretty as yours!
Margaret
What ever it's called, it's a beauty! I haven't seen one like it before. I do love the giraffes, and I think most people would have focused on the big giraffe. I'm glad you focused on this beautiful bird. I'm sure it needed some attention and being posted on ActiveRain gives us all a chance to ooh and ah!
Thanks Pat!
Patricia - have no clue what bird it is, but must admit that it looks very affectionate. Cool photo
Pat - Cool picture of a very cool bird - Topeka - You were out there working that market, too?
Hi Patricia...Handsome Guy, and I think he knows it, can't imagine what he likes to eat...ha
That is the yellow-tailed, black-bellied, gray-backed, bristle-headed, two-faced pecking crane.
I thought that would be obvious.
Most definitely from Africa! I have seen this guy at the zoo before as well! Don't remember exactly what his name is but Margaret is probably correct.
Margaret is right on this one! Sorry, Jay! I just googled African Crowned Crane, and that's the bird alright!
