Uh, Did You Know Your Voice Mail is Full?

Uh, Did You Know Your Voice Mail is Full?

This is one of my pet peeves, in addition to being irked at phone calls that never get returned.

It’s adding insult to injury in a sense.

You call to leave a message about getting some important information, perhaps even following the directions in the MLS to “leave a message then go show,” and you get “This voice mail box is full and is not accepting any messages.”

Really?

It’s even more of a slap in the face after listening to the person you are trying to reach drone on about how important your call is.

I always wonder how that can be, and why a responsible agent would allow this to happen. Or anyone, for that matter.

Perhaps they are fortunate to have sooooo many calls in rapid succession they cannot possible keep up. Right!

Or maybe they like to save all their messages even though they listened to them. Hmmm, maybe.

Is YOUR voice mail full?Obviously they aren’t answering their phone very often or this would not likely happen.

Seems to me voice mail has a purpose, but if one doesn’t use it (like listening to messages, returning the calls, and deleting) then why have it?

Perhaps it’s intended to create a sense of how important the person is. Gee, they have so much business they cannot keep up with all the voice messages. I suspect the message it conveys is quite the opposite.

Quite frankly I think it’s rather rude, and it certainly doesn’t leave a very positive impression to the caller, given that the technology designed to enable people to get in touch is disabled by a full voice mail box.

Maybe I am too obsessive about my voice mails. And given the service I use it is never ever full and all messages are texted and emailed to me.

Perhaps they are using a service that only allows a small number of messages, or the total time allotted is limited. This I doubt in today’s tech world.

The real reason might just be laziness.

Thank goodness I have never gotten a message that the email box is full!

Jeff,  It drives me crazy as well.  It may be laziness or simply an overall lack of caring.  It is not only unprofessional, it shouts out loud and clear -- I CANNOT MANAGE MY BUSINESS!!!!!

I am not impressed by a voice mailbox is full message.  It's a red flag to what it would be like doing business with that person.

Great posting, Jeff.  I could not agree more with you.  Whether it is a broker or even a potential client that calls you, and then when you return the call, no answer!!  Then you try to leave a message, not possible or when you do, never a return call back to you.  Terrible way to try and conduct business!

Karen - no I can't but it happens fairly regularly.

Kathleen - well it does make you wonder. And you are still stuck with not being able to get the info you need. ANd I have even had someone leave ME a message to cal them and then get a full VM box. Amazing.

I am in total agreement with you. It gives the customer a good reason to go on to  another Realtor. When negotiating a deal or looking for feedback it is very annoying and so I resort to text and email, lastly a call to the Broker. Very difficult to deal with!

Dan - agreed. And I remember this happening when I worked in the corporate world and I still cannot understand how someone can let this happen.

Diane

When I happens to me I go right to email. And sometimes to text as well. I told someone I finally reached about it one time adn they acknowledged they weren't even aware. Hard to believe.

I have the same problem with Realtors in my area. A lot of them do not know or do not care that there voice mailbox is full.

Putting the best construction on things - maybe they lost their phone, or it is taking some time to advise of new messages (I know my cell phone sometimes does that).  However, being in a customer service industry - one must find a way to respond in timely manner even in spite of other issues.

And you have to wonder what their clients must think, too?! Bad enough that agents can't reach them.

Yes, I find that very annoying as well. But, I do sometimes understand that all the different technological advances can be overwhelming for some (like me).

Jeff, there is no acceptable excuse - it only gives the caller the impression that their call is not important - and yet it could be the call that agent has been waiting for all year long.  I've learned to carry a 2 x 4 notepad in my purse at all times, I check my messages, take a note and delete.  The sad part, is I've encountered this situation repeatedly with the same agents.  You sure have a way of addressing all the bad habits agents can acquire.

Jeff - Years ago a mentor gave me some of the best advice I've ever received ... never leave the office until you have answered all your calls ... often you may need something from the office to be able to respond! A side benefit - you rarely have a full voice mail ... but even so, it can happen ... it just shouldn't happen for long. The opposite side of the discussion is the voice mail that says "call me when you get this message ..." creating the environment that makes it impossible to prepare for the return call. Thanks for sharing ... and perhaps a little ranting for all of us!

Jeff - I often wonder how many messages need to be in a persons voicemail box in order to receive the message that it's "full."  Like you said with technology today I don't see their being tight restrictions about length or number of voicemails.

Melissa - well, voice mail seems pretty basic to me and it's been around for years. Yeah on a new phone you might be confused but I would think this would be an essential thing to learn right away, llike making calls.

Ellie - That's a good solution. As far as the full mail box, I would think it's an even bigger problem if a client is trying to reach you.

Excellent points, Jack

Michelle - well that's a good question. I can't imagine it is very limited but I suppose it may depend on your service level.

It will never cease to amaze me how people who work on commission can let their voice mail box fill up. Maybe if they returned a few of them they could clear some space for new messages.

Jeff - There is nothing more aggravating to  me than to call another agent and hear that their voice mail box is full.   In my eyes this is inexcusable in an industry such as ours that is so service oriented with our clients and other agents.  It's no wonder why some consumers look upon our profession with such disregard when things like this happen.

Every time this happens to me I shake me head in disbelief.  But I really shouldn't.  It's no surprise really. Plain aggravating!

Sprint allows us 30 voice messages.  I start getting antsy if I even have 5 or 6 in there!

It's happened to me once or twice.  We now can't drive and talk on the phone and I keep on forgetting my ear piece.  I get it cleaned out ASAP!  It drives me bonkers too!
