Blood donationPaying It Forward:  Time To Do Something Gruesome!

It's October!  The Haunted Houses are open, the TV will be running more horror movies then you'd ever want to watch, so why not do something with BLOOD for our Pay It Forward this week?

Okay, so maybe it's not really gruesome  for me to give blood last week (you know I'm a regular donor), but to some folks that needle seems to be as scary as Jason's machete or Freddy's fingers!  But wielded by the skilled hands of the Hoxworth Blood Center technicians, you're as safe as you could be!  Honestly, it takes longer to do all the paperwork and go through the prescreening process than it does to actually fill up that pint bag!  Once I'm in the lounge chair and the needle's in (HINT:  LOOK AWAY when they put the needle in if the idea bothers you!), I'm typically unplugged within about 10 minutes.

So ten minutes of chill time.  If they'd let me, I could probably take a nap.....but for some reason they don't like it when think you've passed out!  Come on, just a cat nap, that's all! :)  So instead I'll usually surf the Net a bit on the Crackberry until I'm done!

And it's one of the best win-win scenarios out there.  It's good for you because it puts your body into overdrive replacing all those missing blood cells, so some fresh soldiers are hitting the front lines to protect you.  And Hoxworth Blood Centers is the primary supplier for our area (31 counties!), and they add a nice touch with a letter later telling you at what hospital your blood was used.  They still protect the patient's privacy, but it's a warm feeling to know that you were personally able to make a difference!  Depending on the situation, you may have LITERALLY been a life saver with your donation!

We know many people CAN'T give for a variety of reasons, but if you can, please consider giving.  There's never an end to the need.  That pint every 8 weeks or so doesn't go nearly far enough, the strength is in the numbers of willing volunteers!  So reach out to your local blood center or hospital!  They'll be able to take care of you and you'll feel really terrific when you're done!

"I do not share my stories of paying it forward for recognition.  I share them so that others might be inspired to do what they can, when they can, where they can.  No more, no less."  Tish Lloyd, North Carolina REALTOR®

Andrea, Liz loves horror flicks, but not the blood splattering kind for the most part.  So I know Michael Myers, Jason, Freddy and the rest of the gang pretty well :)

Bliz, Giving Blood is a Great Idea, and a nice way to Pay it Forward. It does save lives. I wished I could pass those screening tests, but the thought is always there. As a Lab Tech in the service, I used to put that needle in many a donors arms. The size of that needle would Freak a few people out, but like you said, just turn your head away. Kudos for your contributions for helping others.

Giving blood is so important if you can do it!  So many people need it!  I am like Jerry above, I wasn't a lab tech, but a medic and drew blood when I was in the military.  Some folks can get a little squeamish..but if you don't let em see the size of the needle, they'll be ok :)!

Jerry, A skilled tech is VERY appreciated by me!  My vein can be a little difficult to find sometimes, so a clean stick the first time and the red flowing down the tube?  It's a good sight :)

Brenda, A bigger needle means you're done quicker! :)

BLiz, I'm a regular donor as well.  I like Lenn's comment (#11) not giving blood but exchanging it for a cookie.  I remember years ago (at least 30, maybe more) the canteen at the blood center had Mrs. Fields cookies.  They were actually day old cookies but still fresh and delicious nonetheless.  Now everything must be individually wrapped. Cookies, crackers, nuts, etc. and of course the juice to get more sugar into the blood! It's always a great experience for me ... I only wish I could do it in less time. Talk about chill time (LOL)!

Kathleen, The same at our place, all those snacks that are hard to open when you're trying not to use one arm :)  Our local blood center takes good care of us and rarely does it require a double stick to get that pint out of me.

Dorie, Thanks! The creativity bug bit me this morning :)

Donating blood is truly a "Pay it Forward" that pays it forward. I do it, and I'm an organ donor too for just that reason.

Craig, I've got organ donor checked off my driver's license and am in bone marrow registry.  It's long odds to be a match on the bone marrow, but just in case, you never know.

BLiz I have so gotten out of the habit of giving blood.  I used to jump at every opportunity to give blood.  I have made an attempt or two this year and mobile donation centers, but both times, I was early and they had not opened yet and I failed to go back.  I'll do better.

Charita, The day job makes it fairly easy.  They're in here about 5-6 times a year.  If their schedule doesn't fit mine, within 2 miles is one of their permanent facilities....very nice and totally convenient to go down there for a bit and drop off a pint :)
