WHEN THE TWINKLE IS GONE....One Man's Simple Statement Of His "Shattered Dreams"

IDEALISTIC IDEAS ABOUT REAL ESTATE CAN BE SHATTEREDInspired by Michael Morgan's post,  Shattered Dreams  I had to write this to help remind myself of the beginning. Maybe we all remember the start of our careers in real estate when we were full of hope and maybe even inspiration from a great, early real estate experience.

On Friday, I read this post that sent me back to my early days in real estate; I was taken to a place that I  am sure many of us in this profession have been before. Michael recalled a person--a polished, professional real estate agent that left a lasting memory; a memory that brought him into the profession with his head held high and a goal to achieve the best for those whom he would work for. Idealistic thoughts of his first experience with an exceedingly impressive agent gave him the drive to become one!

This particular post was not a rant--it was not a lesson in what to do and what not to do, and it was not about the very shaky real estate market at the moment. It was about a shattering of his dream--losing the twinkle in his eye and the idealist in his mind.

It was a simple and pure statement of where Michael, this new agent was at the moment he wrote it--The title "Shattered Dreams" says it all! In my response to his simple and genuine post, I wanted to acknowledge his honesty and let him know that as a new agent, he is in a very good place. He has not yet suffered the worst to come and he has not yet seen the devastation of the immediate after-effects of September, 2008. He may never witness that kind of thing--let's hope A REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALhe does not!

Michael: What a lovely post! You say you have a twinkle in your eyes and I think that is great---I remember when I had a twinkle in my eyes too! Those were the good old days and now I have something else in my eyes---tears for all the folks out there who were so hurt by the real estate recession. I am really working on making those tears into a twinkle again, but I want to warn you about the fact that when you do find that the twinkle has turned to tears, don't lose the original feelings you had about that high quality you saw in the professional you first met in real estate!

This is actually a great time to start out in real estate--you will never have to worry about a bubble bursting, at least for a long while. You won't have to go through hearing the hysterical cries of the homeowners who were foreclosed upon in the weeks and months following September 18, 2008!!! Thank your lucky stars that you won't experience that because nothing, nothing at all is worse than that! Good luck to you and your positive attitude!...and I am sure, with your help, your Grandmother will be just fine!

I wanted to find out more about this man, Michael Morgan.  So I went to his blog just to see more about him....

Come to find out, he is an Army Veteran who just began his real estate career...full of fresh hope and optimism from a tour of duty in the Middle East. He says he wants to be able to find homes for those who have served to help keep us free. He is brand new on ActiveRain and he has written only 3 posts---so this one had his heart in it.

I was taken by the full range of emotions he was able to express in his short, simple post, "Shattered Dreams".

He has been through hell and back overseas and yet is able to let us know how he really feels about the future in a profession where those who fill the ranks are constantly called into question.

I see Michael as the best hope for our profession...he has what it takes in more ways than I can count...What a fine addition!

I, personally, think he will be just fine! What do you  think???

I think Michael's discipline from his previous career training is going to serve him well as a Realtor.  If I loose that twinkle is when its time to retire.  Great post Paula, enjoyed.

Wow thank you so much, I have goosebumps as I am writing this, thank you again, I had no idea that just writing what was important to me would actually benefit other people. I would read activerain while I was over in Afghanistan, and it gave me so much help, in just calming down, after I got back on the post from going out on a mission. I have wanted to be in Real Estate for so long and in the middle of this deployment me and my wife agreed that it was the right time. We also decided to move down to the Orlando area, and I love it here but I have no contacts except for my Aunt Bev. Its a whole new start and a whole new Career. I actually took my Real Estate Agent course online oversea's, and when I came back I took 2 day refresher course.

To be honest with you i'm scared to death of failing, my dad told me that if its my calling then somehow I would manage and to just keep my morals and principles and I would do fine. I'm still waiting on my first client to buy a house, but I'm working with a nice older woman that is deciding to rent or buy. she is just looking at all of her options, right now and I told her that I did not want to paint her into a corner and force her buy, but I was there for her support and guidance in what ever she felt best for herself.

Sorry for going on so long and rambling, but I am humbled by what you wrote.

I see that you might have went to my profile, and honestly I do not know what to write about myself, but I find it so easy to write about what I feel passionately about.

Thanks again from the bottom of my heart

Have a GREAT DAY

Thanks for bringing Michael's story to us all.  I know that his military background will give him what it takes to weather the storms in this industry.  Good luck to him and I know that he will be a survivor.

Paula - I think he will be fine, as long as he has a strong support group around him.  Although I have been in the mortgage business for quite awhile, I am new to being a broker in these last 4 years.  It takes a lot of constant cheerleading from the ones that love you to keep going.  The twinkle is just a spark, but I am sure with a lot of hard work and time, we will all get our twinkle back! Hopefully...

Michael: When I wrote this, I thought that the chances of you reading it were very slim--I felt the other members here should see your post because we are always talking here on AR about up leveling the profession. In my humble opinion, we need the "new blood" of a category of agents that we may never have had in the profession before....Therefore your post, fresh and honest, was very encouraging to me. I am so happy you wrote it!

So, thank you for finding this post, reading and commenting on it--It will help all of us to see the value of the background that you have in the military (discipline). It just may be a good thing for all of us to know. Who Knows, with the troops coming back home all the time and having a hard time to find work--it just may be one great way to alleviate that stress. It takes a huge amount of disipline to manage your business at the same time you trying to bring in an income. I have found that deals culminate after a great deal of hard work, perhaps many weeks or months of doing the "grunt" work before it all happens; but YOU can do it!!! Don't give up, it will happen!

Good luck to you and trust that all your fellow members here on AR are here to help in any way we can--and welcome to this wonderful place called ActiveRain!!!

Kathy: His attitude is what will make him into a fine agent, don't you think?...and I agree his passion will be his best advocate!

Jackie: I agree--as you know it is not easy to get it going, but eventually all your hard work pays off and if he can get past the initial fear that it won't happen, let go of the NEED to Make it happen, then he will be fine and his discipline will be his support system.

Doug: Isn't it interesting to think about all the times that we felt that we were not going to get anywhere--how we had to learn the very basic art of letting go and going forward??? In Michael's case he will go throught the same thing but with his passion and his discipline,I believe he will become a top notch agent!

With the support of all the members here it has been helpful to get through the difficult times; venting can be the best thing for all of us when we have a problem, and AR is a great place to get things off our chests!

Paula,

I have suggested this post.

I had read Michaels earlier posts and featured them in the Newbie Group but had not yet read this last one. Because I normally am foraging around in the Newbie Group and the Real Estate Rookie group, I tend to see "newer" agents a lot.   I have always been a proponent of new agents and have written several posts regarding this.

To Michael I would like to say, "your dad is correct".   If RE is your calling, you will plunge on no matter what. In fact, any profession would need a passion for it in order to make it work.

Real Estate is probably one of the most interesting, unboring, challenging occupations I have ever been in and I have been in a few:) It takes a certain "type" to do it well and I think you show those qualities already. Wishing you luck!

I must have missed something. How come you chose September 18, 2008? Our foreclosure problems started here in San Diego in late 2005. I think we led the nation into this mess, but we're also leading everyone out.

Hi Jim, September 18, 2008 was the day when Pres. Bush and his Finance Sec'y Paulson stood at the microphones with the "deer-in-the-headlights" look on their white faces, telling America that we were insolvent--That they had to pump billions into the economy to save us all from slipping into a crisis (of course we saw where that took us!) The reason I remember that date is it was the day before my birthday and it was the day the Money Market  fund broke the dollar for the first time in history...after that day, everything stopped in the economy. What brought Bush and Paulson out to talk to us all was the fact that an "entitiy or entities" had pulled hundreds of billions out of the money market and no one knows to this day who did that. (I personally thing it was Geo Soros)...that same day, I had a text message from my nephew who is a Director at CitiGroup and he told me there was no money---all the banks were running on empty! Never happened like that before--ever...then of course the big failure of Lehman Bros. in October was what most people think of but the real event began on Sept 18, 2008. I remember also how the foreclosure process was the lead story in the media for a long time before the 9/18/08 event too but because this market is so connected to Wall Street, that single event took us all down, big time! I do hope you are leading us out of the recession, by the way!!! :)

Paula -- you truly embrace a valid point - if more personell from the trenches or in law enforcement were to join the ranks, we surely would get new positive dynamics in the industry, where loyalty, honesty, camraderie, teamwork and accountability would prevail at much higher rates, thus iminently contributing to a positive revamp in the industry.

My view is that over the last decades as a result of hyperinflated financial systems our entire universal financial system is close at the brink of collapse, as forecast by the American physical economist and statesman Lyndon LaRouche. In addition Darwinism, based on "the theory of evolution" the survival of the fittest, is undermining grossly humanistic values like compassion, the belief in human equality, collective sharing of resources to the good of all, as designed by the Creator.

Therefore, Christianity and other belief systems  have been discredited, and with the belief that our fellow man is of less value, a hole elite of egocentrists evolved....so, it's good to have some sticklers believing in a vision of our higher purpose, in the twinkle of our -collective souls, so that all can enjoy abundance, loving relationships, and happiness.

Paula, sorry for the extended comment, but I felt the need from my heart, soul and mind  to express my solidarity with a courageous and deserving Newbie. Best wishes.  Peter

BTW - which one is the suggest button? So often I see interesting comments and just don't know where to press.
