AAAHHH, AUTUMN . . . YOU CAN SMELL THE WOODSMOKE IN THE AIR!

By
Real Estate Agent with Sotheby's International Realty Canada - Brokerage

In our part of the world it has been a cold and damp weekend with the wind blowing a gale!   The leaves have only just begun to colour and the wind and rain are dashing them to the ground already.

It has dropped down in temperature, not enough for the furnace to come on but enough to want a nice fire to make the room cozy.

Our fireplaces are natural gas but many of my neighbours still have wood burning apparatus.

After enjoying my first pumpkin pie of the season . . .

I stepped outside a few moments ago with the dogs and there it was . . .

the smell of autumn . . .

Wood smoke hanging in the air!

I just love that smell even though I choose not to deal with the all the inconvenience of wood;  chopping, stacking, lugging to the fireplace, fighting to get it lit (and keep lit!) dealing with the ashes after the fact . . .

not for me!

But I do appreciate my neighbours who still go to all the bother, if only for the lovely scent lingering in the air on Pine Street in Gananoque.

Thank you for my first smell of Autumn!

If you or someone you know would like to Buy or Sell a home in the Gananoque and 1000 Islands area with a fireplace or woodstove please give me a call and together we'll find a place with ambiance!

Susan, it is so great that you have some neighbors who still have wood-burning fireplaces.  Smelling the flavour of the wood smoke really puts its stamp on things that Fall reall IS here.  I bet as the trees slowly begin to show their Autumn colours... the beauty you are normally surrounded by becomes even prettier.  Enjoy !

Hearing about all of this really makes me miss my trips to Canada that I made perhaps every two years when I used to live in Cleveland, Ohio.  I even made it as far as the Old City of Quebec four times.  Love Le Chateau Frontenac... managed to stay there twice... back when I had money... LOL.

I don't know if that picture of the kitty on the hearth by the fireplace is YOUR kitty... but I do know if I had a fireplace going... that it is exactly where my Mollie T Cat would be.

Mollie T loves to get wet... take showers and put her head under the faucet, but after that... she would just LOVE taking a very long cat-nap next to a roaring fire.

Susan - I love that smell also, but, alas, it will be awhile for us in my neck of the woods.  Less than a week ago we had a day that reached 100 degrees, but it is cooling off now.  Enjoy the season!

Hi Susan-I know that smell well and I do love to smell it. I used to have a wood stove years ago and you are right it is a lot of work for all the reasons you described. I wouldn't have one now because of all the work. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I think you said it was today. Have a great week,

Susan - I too love that smell of autumn in the air.  I also love those gloriously coloured leaves you get back east.  Hope you'll post some leaf photos when they really start changing colour.  Can't believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner!

Hi Susan, you know how certain scents can bring us right back to places in time? Well, the smell of wood burning reminds me of when I used to actually WALK everywhere as a teen. This always brings me back to walking home from a friends house at night, starting out all chilly but after a mile (yeah..a couple of miles was nothing then), you could just walk...looking into all the lit up homes while breathing in that smell of wood burning in the cool air...Aaah...yes, a good scent indeed!

Some day I will share my story of how the smell of a fireplace got me in big trouble.  Hope you had a great weekend.

I love the fall with all it colors and yes the smell of fireplaces.  I grew up in house where that was our only heat source.  The older I get the more I love the memories.

I love it also. We have a fireplace in our home and it is so wonderful when there is a warm fire going. I love chopping wood as well. Very therepautic.

I'll never give up my wood-burning fireplace, even though we live in CA on the very moderate-temp central coast, where we rarely actually NEED a fire. But I love everything about having fires and will never buy an insert or whatever they are called.

However, there are several people in my small city who definitely disagree, and write letters to the editor on a regular basis about how dangerous the pollutants in wood smoke are and demand that the city and county ban wood fires. I hope that never happens. We already have such a strict fireplace ordinance in place that only a very few fireplace modules are allowable. They haven't banned wood-burners, but have made it almost impossible to build a new one.

One of my most favorite smells of autumn.........but I agree, leave all that work to the neighbors and enjoy your natural gas fireplaces.

Hi Susan - If you want to enjoy the outside smell of a wood burning fireplace in the Greater Toronto Area, you need to go to certain parts of the city.  In recent years, wood burning fireplaces have ceased to be included in houses.

Pam -  I like your description!

Jane and Garry -  I love your part of the world.

Karen Anne -  you chose a very pretty part of our country to visit!  And no, that is not my cat. My two lived to be 22 years of age and one of them loved water like yours and actually would take to the swimming pool on her own, swimming over to me on my floater!  Miss them every day but our rescue dog would eat it if we dared bring one home.  Your Mollie looks like a real character - enjoy!

Barbara - we were the same!  It is shocking how fast the weather can change!

Sharon -  our Thanksgiving is this weekend coming up, but thanks :0)

Sally - I have a brother arriving from the West tomorrow just for our fall folliage!

Cindy - we share such similar childhood memories!  I still like to do that :0)

Joe - Uh Oh . . .  I think you have some splaining to do!

John - there is something different about that kind of heat . . .  I've visited a few places like that and they were cozy!

Phil -  I hear alot of guys saying the same about chopping wood.  Good exercise too!

Sonsie -  I'm glad you've got yours.  I can understand some of the concern as when I lived in Northern Ireland, the coal smoke just hung in the air and choked you.  But woodsmoke???   Not even close to being a problem -  people with control issues!   Enjoy your fire!!!

Roger -  the favourite time of year for us Libras!!!

Marc -  sad!

Susan- I'm with you on that one. It's nice to have the smell to remind us of winter but, the convenience of being able to flip a switch anytime you want some quick warmth is even better.  I work from home and it's so nice to have my gas fireplace to take the chill off.

Call a Marana neighbor, I'm THERE!

We used to heat our home with firewood growing up in Washington State.  Loved the smell, and the feeling of "home" and nostalgia it conveyed.  Especially if we happened to get snow.  Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
