Just found a really cool new search engine that lets you visually search for a term: Quintura.  The technical term is called "Latent Semantic Indexing".  And there are actually many search engines incorporating this technology into their algorithms.  You can navigate through the cloud of related terms and refine it by clicking words on and off, the cloud will then update your results. (that is where the semantic word relationship comes in).  Here is an excerpt from their site:

q

"While viewing the Quintura Cloud, you can visually navigate and easily refine in order to find relevant information faster and more efficiently! "

"The map shows only those words that have close contextual relationships with the keywords in your query. Click a word to change your query and get relevant results that will comply with your new query.  The size of a word shows its significance in relation to the query. The larger words have a strong contextual relationship with your query while the smaller words do not."

I would bookmark this one and keep an eye on them.  They are using some new technology that really makes searching easier.  If you get a chance, play with it for a minute or two.  Once you get the hang of it, it really makes searching faster as you can find things rather quickly without much effort.

Have you ever tried to search for something but just didn't know what terms to use?  The context cloud method makes things a snap, as it is basically teaching you which terms are related.

Now all they need to do is clean up their interface a little, and they will be a serious contender for quality search...

The obvious question is, when/if Quintura does strike it big, will they offer sponsored results?  How do you optimize to score high in their results?  Will we need to start rethinking our SEO efforts based on the new latent semantic indexing technology?  Maybe we will start thinking more in terms of keyword context and term relationships as opposed to single keyword phrases.

The successful SEO guru will learn how to adapt.

Thanks for the heads up on Quintura. There's lots of innovation coming down the pipe, including some new visual search engines that look promising such as Kartoo.

Before Real Estate I was a dotcom guy...heplped take a couple of companies public and one that crashed and burned. I say this as the one that crashed and burned lost out to Google as the next best Internet search technology. We adapted LSI to all the unstructured data on the Internet and it worked fansastic but was rejected by the investment community

After rejection we managed to prove it's value in the intellegance communities after 911 to help connect all the dot's. We developed a smart version of LSI that could learn from words, phrases and concepts thereby finding other related data in the world of unstructured data. Pretty cool stuff.

Anyway, I find it interesting that after many years in the dark this great technology may finally be used as "we" initially invisioned.

Thanks for sharing!

You don't need to optimize for them they just use Yahoo's search results. If you rank in Yahoo you will rank just fine.

Very interesting. If I hadn't seen Kens comments I would have wondered how they are getting the data. The cloud thing I think is going to take the general public a little while to get used to..

Quintura looks very interesting indeed.  Yakov Sadchikov (An owner of one of the Top 25 Financial Advisers in 2003), the CEO is one of the three original Russian co-founders of Quintura.  SEO will be an ever changing field, but as long as your content is relevant, sizable and fresh I wouldn't fear any new search engines coming out in the near future.  As said beautifully by CREN: "Blessed are the flexible" :)

A similar site has existed for at least five to six years called http://www.kartoo.com.  The interface is actually a bit more mature then Quintura, however both of them are relatively hard to spell.  I would suggest that Quintura is hard enough to spell that it won't get the requisite traction necessary to become popular.  Unlike Google and Yahoo which are easy to remember and type in.  I don't see any one saying "I'll Quintura it and see what comes up."

I think graphical searching is still in its infancy.  Now if the graphical relevancy engine would sit on the screen kind of like the iTunes store when listening to music and automatically show graphically relevant sites relative to the site currently being viewed, now that would be cool.  Kind of like a graphical Alexa engine.  Maybe zoom in and out like widgets on the mac.

Those are my two cents worth.

All the Best,
