People relocating to Northern Virginia often ask what type of home they can purchase in different price ranges.  Other people who ask about this include current D.C. and Northern Virginia residents who have not been in the housing market for a while and potential investors from other parts of the country.

The median sales price of single family homes in Arlington and Alexandria that sold within the last 30 days was $675.000.  In Fairfax County, the median sales price was quite a bit lower at $609,517.

The $500,000 to $600,000 price range represents about 21% of the currently available single family home inventory for sale in Alexandria and Arlington

In Fairfax County, which for the most part is a bit further out from Downtown D.C., this price range similarly represents 20% of all available detached single family homes.

Here are some examples of single family homes that you can purchase in Northern Virginia for just under $600,000.

JASON:  Thanks for your comments.  Once we get into the $750,000 price range, you'll start seeing some really nice homes.  I plan to do another series of posts on townhouses and condos as well.

BRIAN:  Thank you for posting this.  Jason has been depressing me with his version of "what you get for the money" in Austin.  Seeing your post makes me realize that there are other versions of Long Island out there.

ADAM:  Thanks for taking a look at what's for offer at $600K.  I don't know about Long Island, but a couple years ago during the seller market frenzy, I'd been inside million dollar homes that would have needed total kitchen upgrades, new floors, and a lot of renovation.  These days those homes need to be in tip-top shape in order to sell.

LISA:  We originally bought our 2 bedroom 2 bathroom condo for $175K in January 2003, but it had doubled in price since then.
