Mentors a valuable resource you should use

By
Real Estate Agent with AmREDS

On a previous blog I mentioned some negative experiences I had with an agent. Well, I like to turn it around and point out that I think most agents are good.

In particular, I have a mentor at my office who has been in the business for 30+ years. He's not perfect. He tends to be absent minded partly because he's so busy with projects and clients. He is an invaluable resource for me. Whenever I have questions about real estate transaction, I go to him and he usually can point me in the right direction. This is where his vast experience is so useful. I've also seen him helping everyone who asks for it. He knows that helping people even in a competitive industry such as real estate will have a better return that not helping people.

I hope you all have or have had a mentor to fall back on for help. I know for me it has helped tremendously. I know that Active Rain and the community can also be like a mentor or mentors, but it's just good to have a  live, face-to-face person sometimes.

I agree 100%.  Your mentor sounds very much like mine.....almost always sheds new light on the situation and can provide some advice for almost any situation.

The best mentors I have had in life have been dead.  We can gain access to their wisdom for the cost of a book.  I also have some good mentors for different areas of my life, but they all disappoint and let you down at some time or another (something about being human).

Chris - I agree books are a good source of information, but sometimes books don't have quite the answers you look for. The internet can be viewed as an updated version of books, but I still think a live human being that wants to help you is the best source of help. This is not to say that any mentor or anyone will have all the answers, but sometimes knowing that someone else is trying to help you out ends up helping you out.

My first year in Real Estate I hardly made any money and I was basically running around in circles. Then I met my mentor. My mentor has 25 years in the business and I was really fortunate that he offered to show me the business. Since I started following his directions I am making a living and no longer struggling. I recommend that every new agent look for a brokerage with a mentor program.

Johnny, you are right. Everyone who wants to be successful needs a mentor or coach. They need someone who can guide them into building not just NOW success, but long term success as well.
