Library needs to expand, but how?, an article from the Loveland Reporter-Herald, reports that despite city plans to expand the current library, a few of the Loveland City Council candidates have expressed interest in building a branch library.  Ward 4 candidate Don Archuleta said a branch would stem some of the tide of vehicle traffic into the downtown and could specialize in one subject or one service, in addition to easing pressure on the existing library.  The current unofficial plans from consultants for a Loveland Public Library expansion have generally suggested a two-story addition of about 27,000 square feet and renovations of the current 20-year-old, 32,000-square-foot building.  The city's current capital plans call for design work in 2009 and building construction and renovations in 2010.  The price tag is an estimated $9 million and the city has asked the Friends of the Library to raise $2 million of those funds.

For sale: 2 million empty homes, an article from CNNMoney.com, reports that according to the latest government reading, the number of vacant homes for sale rose in the third quarter.  A report from the Census Bureau puts the number of vacant homes for sale at 2.07 million in the third quarter, up about 2% from the second quarter and 7% above levels one year ago.  The number is down 5% from the record high reading reached in the first quarter, though.  Dean Baker, co-founder of the Center for Economic and Policy Research said, "It's a lot of homes sitting there vacant.  It's very hard to see how we're near a bottom, when you have that much excess supply."
