At the encouragement of Jessica HughesCraig Schiller and Ginger Sala, I'm writing this blog regarding perfectionism and procrastination.

Craig posted a question on his blog asking how much time people spend in ARand if they can quantify an ROI on that investment in time and it got me thinking.

One thing everyone, including myself, must guard against is that this type of site can become a very addictive place and can become a form of procrastination that keeps us from doing real business activity.

We can get lulled into thinking we're doing stuff to improve ourselves and our business, when in reality we are coming here because its comfortable, friendly and we don't really face the rejection we may subject ourselvles to by making the calls and putting ourselves in the position we need to, to really build our business.

I know this because I guard against it every day.  When you come to AR, do so wtih a direct purpose and plan in mind. Set a time limit.  Get in, Get Out and Get something of value every time but don't lurk around and surf endlessly.

Procrastination is a killer of our hopes and dreams, its a killer of our self-confidence, self-esteem and self-worth and causes much undo stress.  A few years ago I created a program to help business professionals with this issue, it's called, "End Procrastination NOW!" and perfectionism is really just a fear of failure and rejection and is another form of procrastination.

Just my two cents (or maybe 3-4 cents)...hmm, maybe this should be my next blog posting, thanks CRaig for stirring my thoughts on this subject...

Now, I know from working with both realtors and mortgage professionals that procrastination IS an issue for many. Therefore, I'd like to help, but I need your help.  That's why I have created a Procrastination/Peak Performance Survey just for Active Rain members, for those of you who decide to take part in my survey, you will receive access to an hour-long radio interview on ending procrastination I gave last summer.

To access the survey, click here.

Once I get feedback on the key issues from the survey, I'll share the results so no one feels alone, and see if I can provide some strategies to help break through.

Hi Skip,

I seem to put things off until they become a must do and I know if I just get it off my to do list I'll feel much better. I find putting things off until the last minute hinders my ability to complete other tasks. The worst part is when I put something off because I know I can get it done later then there always seems to be something that always comes up and I end up putting that task off for another day or so.

 Yuck...

Thanks Jay

LOL Oh come on, this is the only legal lurking I can do! lolol

Seriously though, I do take time just to be on here and have fun; but on days when I have a reallllly long 'to do' list, I have to close out AR or I won't get it done!

I spend about two hrs on average on AR a day; sometimes much more; sometimes much less. I want to be able to read new posts of newbies too; I just hope 300 a week does not become the norm! (lol)

You know - BALANCE.... Everything in balance. Too much of anything is not good, even the info-packed atmosphere of AR. I love it here, but you are right - don't use it as a tool to qualify your procrastination.

Wow, I was just thinking about this the other night, after posting a few articles on Thursday. Was that really the best way I could have spent a zero degree wind-chill afternoon?

I could have been doing other things of course, but the weather and shopping made Active Rain a nice place to be. Of course, I paid for it yesterday getting my listings together!

Skip, Thanks for the post. I see that I am not the only one, who has the addiction. I now have to schedule time for AR in order to keep it in perspective. The great balancing act!.

I'd like to make a comment, but I'll have to get to it later......

Great post. For those of you who don't know Skip, he is an excellent coach and leads the Business Achievement Gym (B.A.G.) BAG is for business professionals who are looking to improve each aspect of their business. Many of us fly solo, whcih is great because of the freedom we have. It also makes it easy to not be accountable to ourselves for many things that we should be doing. The structure of the Achievement Gym help you become accountable to yourself through your exposure to the ideas of others like yourself.

Skip has experience with real estaet agents and loan officers, but never was one. Sound silly, but this makes him more effective since he is not apt to sympathize with us over our shortcomings and failures. No whining! Regardless of the interest rates or the market he pushes you to be accountable to yourself which leads to success.

I have worked with Skip for the past three years and thought I was successful when I started. I like my world a whole lot better no.

I have started to make a better list. When I put the list together there is one thing I ask. Does this absolutely need to be done today?  If the answer is yes, I start with it immediately. The next hing I have started to ask: Do I need to complete this our can I delgate it?

These questions have helped me to prioritize tasks and get through them more effectively.
