Drawing on Italian Culture, San Diego's Little Italy Celebrates with Festa

Little Italy Festa

The Little Italy Festa will draw more than a 100,000 visitors this weekend to it's Gesso Italiano Chalk Art Competition.

As part of the Little Italy Festa Celebration, a select team of more than a dozen chalk artists will re-create a portion of Michaelangelo's ceiling of the Sistine Chapel that will span an entire city block.

The Little Italy Festa now in it's 17th year,  will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the reunification of Italy with this years chalk art competition sponsored by the Little Italy Association, showcasing the customs and heritage of the Italian immigrants that settled this area of San Diego many decades ago. The galleries, restaurants and cafes will be dressed in their finery as they welcome citizens from all of San Diego to join them this Sunday starting at 10:00am for a fun filled day of festive food, music and art.

Some of the fun events will include a Pizza Tossing Contest, an Italian Motor Sport Car Show, a Boche Ball tournament, a Stick ball exhibition, the chalk art competition and a gathering of the Little Italy Chef's for a major cooking demo at the Italian Table. Italiophiles will see first hand the deconstruction of the area's best food dishes offered from the local neighborhood eateries.

What a cool event! My Renton has a long and rich Italian history. Infact, most of downtown old Renton was/is still owned by the Italians of yesteryear when I was growing up. Eventhough my background was French, Belguim, and Swedish... We loved our Italian friends and food!

We stayed in Little Italy last year when we were down there for RainCamp.  I had the best dinner sitting outside and it was so fun.  I hope you have a great time William!

William - The Little Italy Festa Celebration in San Diego sounds like a very interesting and unique event. I can't even imagine what a re-created portion of Michaelangelo's ceiling of the Sistine Chapel will look like spanning a whole city block! I look forward to the photos I'm sure you will be taking.

Hi Gail, It is a very long story but before the war, the Italian immigrant village here in San Diego  actually had a fishing village where little Italy met the water's edge. That was then, and today Little Italy is up the hill now. The parallelism to the hills in Italy would actually be a good one.

William, I would so enjoy this event. Just to see the art and well the food. That photo is amazing. I've always wanted to visit Italy. If I don't make it there...maybe we can make to "Little Italy" down by you! Have a beautiful day, William!
