Craigslist Murder

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Burnet

Thanks to everyone who commented on my post, "Am I too young to use my picture?"  And while the overall vote is yes, I still have my concerns.

See, Katherine Olson, 24, was found dead in the trunk of her car at Burnsville park, Minnesota, late Friday night.  She was last seen on Thursday morning, when she went to meet someone about a baby-sitting job that was posted on Craigslist.

This is a very sad story.  The internet world can be an amazing place to meet new people, grow businesses and find information, but it can also be a place for predators to search.

Now more then every we need to keep our eyes and ears open, I know we all get excited when we see that future prospect respond to our ads.  Just make sure you are safe and always tell someone where you are going and If you still feel uncomfortable, then you probable shouldn't even be going.

So how do you feel about me using my picture now?

What do you do to stay safe?

Tyghre - I still stand behind my comment that you should use your picture.  You will definitely benefit from it, as you seem to be very photogenic.  As far as safety goes, it is a problem that we all will have to some degree regardless of whether we use our pics or not.  You just have to be smart about what you do, and do everything possible to minimize those risks.  If I remember correctly, you are new to real estate, meaning that you have to use every tool that you have to compete with all the other realtors in your area.  Do not hide one of the best tools that you have, because you are afraid.  That is no way to live.  Maybe once you have built your business, then you can put that tool back in the toolbox, so to speak.  So just be safe about it, and do whatever you can to minimize the possible threatening situation.  Your broker should have some advice about how to do this.  If not, let me know.  I have several that I do to help.  But believe me, the safety issue will not go away regardless.  I am bigger than most people physically, but I still have the same safety issues, and tread carefully.

Tyghre,         I agree with Dale.  You need to use your picture but there are ways to stay as safe as possible.  If you read my blog "My "Spooky" Halloween story"  you'll see one thing I do.  Tell someone where you are going when you expect to be back and so many other things you can do to limit your risk.  Be aware at all times.  Blessings...Ricki

Tyghre- Don't use your picture. It is not worth it. I knew this girl who was killed, and feel very intensely the fact that it could have been anyone. Don't give men on the internet a reason to seek you out and fantasize about you. Men don't understand this, but we as women are constantly under threat.

That's a horrible story.

Whenever I meet with new clients, I always have them meet me at my office( office hours)to interview them.

Afterwards, I still take an assistant with me to showings.

I would advice you to do the same. Have them meet you at your office, introduce them to your broker and receptionist. Before leaving anywhere with them always inform the receptionist or someone that you care about, where your going, what time you will be back, and with who you are going with.

Might seem like alot, but those few details can make a diffrence.

Interesting post! I have always been of the impression that pictures were a matter of choice.  I don't always think pictures are always a good choice.

Always think safety first!  Pictures can cause some serious problems from obsessive freaks.
