28 Comments on Pretty Is AS Pretty Does ~ NOT! Watch out for this beauty!
That IS very pretty! I had no idea! Thanks for the very helpful botany lesson! ;-]
Judi
Growing up I had an up close and personal experience with poison ivy it was not a good experience.
Good luck and success,
Lou Ludwig
Karen, the red leaves are the color of poison ivy in the fall. The purple is just a play on colors.
Anita, It is a real bummer to get poison ivy.
Ed, ah ha. Watch out for that stuff.
Lou, I do understand.
I never knew that poison ivy was purple. It does look pretty but then again Casey Anthony has pretty features too but not a pretty person.
Judi, I have seen some neophyte hunters get blasted with this stuff. It is not something you forget after you've done it once!
We have poison oak out this way... Rounded leaves, but it does turn red in the autumn as well... I have it all around my house!
Judi, I know the look and affects of the pretty plant all to well, and have learned to stay waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay form it.
Way back in my boy scout days, there was a telephone pole that was thickly covered with poison ivy by our meeting house. The scoutmaster used to take the newer kids and challenge them to identify this "tree" with the caveat that they could not touch or smell it. Almost no one could guess it, but once he told us, we never forgot what poison ivy looked like!
Judi:
Nice post. We have had our encounters with poison Ivy. It can do some damage.
Judi - Pat sent me over - you made her list of weekly picks! Poison Ivy really is a problem in a lot of areas and I've had it a few times from walking my pup. I finally now know what it looks like and avoid it at all costs!
Word to the wise stay away from beautiful red plants that turn before others. I have not had a poison ivy instance as this point in my life which is fairly signifigant considering how much I love to hike and camp! I had a friend that went camping and forgot to bring the tp on the trail that had a fairly bad run-in on the trail though!! Bad news!
Hey, Judi! I included this post in Last Week's Favorites. Have a great Sunday! (Scratch, scratch)
Never ran into this plant and don't want to. Kristine
Judi ~ I had no idea that poison ivy turns such beautiful colors. I have been fortunate enough to never encounter the stuff.
Poison Ivy.. a pretty plant but not one you want to pick to put in a bouquet.
Judi, That poison ivy does look pretty, but I think I'll stay away. Believe it, or not, I'm allergic
to the agapanthus plant. It has beautiful purple flowers, which don't bother me, but the jelly-like substance that's secreted when the leaves are cut, make me break out like poison ivy.
I really like your new Profile Photo! Best wishes always.
It was very easy for us to get rid of. Crossbow kills it roots and all. We had NO regrowth at all.
My mom was allergic to it, her skin would boil and break open ... not pretty. Us kids would wallow in it and never be affected. My mom would then wash our filthy clothes and that is where she would pick it up. Sorry mom.
Hi Judi,
We have Poison Oak in our area and it is also pretty but nasty if your skin comes in contact with it!
Some people are more allergic to poison ivy than others. I can touch it, rub it on my skin, and have no effects. Ive heard some people have severe reactions to it, and some none at all.
