Hi George-The rental prices and the mortgage prices are comparable here in San Antonio as well so if you are able, you might as well buy and invest in your own American Dream, rather than someone else's. Thanks for commenting :)!
Hi Brenda. Today's market presents opportunity that is amazing. Trying to get the kids to make the commitment and take advantage of these rates and prices! It just doesn't make sense to rent if you can afford to purchase!
Hi Carol Ann-Today's market is incredible for buying a home. For those who can, the time has really never been better. Thanks for dropping in :)!
Hi Brenda -
Thanks for the heads up that buying is better than renting contest. Informative blog with good commentary. Have a super week!
Hi Cathy-There's a let's get buyers off of the fence contest that I know about, but not the whole buying is better than renting one, lol :)! Not a problem. You have a super week too!
Brenda, did you know that if that rent was $1000/month and the sales price of the home was $100,000 that over 5 years you would have saved over $24,000 if you had just bought the home in the first place? Great post.
Renting is very good for the home owner but not an ideal situation for the tenant. It is always exciting to take a renter and help them become home owners. Thanks for posting.
Hi Randy-Now that is another terrific way to put it!
Hi Angel Realty-Renting is a terrific investment for the owner and helps them achieve the dream of not only home ownership but investment as well. Those who can afford to buy and are able, should :)!

Hi Invisible Hand-I am under the impression that everything is priced higher now in 2011 than in 1999. I wasn't involved in Real Estate then. Perhaps in your market, home prices are inflated, but I do believe that in San Antonio Texas there are many available appropriately priced homes for the market today. There are those that are listed higher than they need to be, but then those don't really sell. Additionally, I think that to expect home prices to decrease back to 1999 prices is unrealistic. Just my opinion.
There are many benefits to home ownership and along with those benefits comes many responsibilities. I am not aruguing that EVERYONE should own a home, I am arguing that those who are financially able to do so and READY, should seriously consider it because the prices, inventory and RATES are terrific, (at least here in San Antonio ). Thanks for your input.
Hi Amy-Not a problem ;)!
Brenda:
You make a good case for home ownership. Hope renters in Texas see your blog and buy a home of their own.
Hi Evelyn-Thank you and I hope renters everywhere are waking up a little. If they are able to buy, now is a terrific time!
Brenda - I love the way you show the reality of the situation. If you can buy for close to the price of renting, I think buying makes a lot of sense.
I agree with you Brenda, Buying is always better than renting. You did a great job in giving your readers why they should buy and not rent. Renting is good if you only stay for a while but if you are looking for a long time home, buying is the best option.
I'm in the high rent district in Washington DC and Alexandria VA, and the rental market is very tight. With interest rates at 4 percent or below, I scratch my head sometimes when I hear people who can buy, decide not to because they're waiting for homes to appreciate.
There are times to rent and times to own a home. The ability to know those times is the challenge and requires educating the public.
Hi Christine-If one is able to buy, then buying makes way more sense than renting. You're just throwing money away.
Hi Rob-I will agree that if you are not going to be in the same place for too long, then buying may not be for you unless you are planning to make it a rental investment later on...however, if you are able, then buy now!
Hi Tamara-If it's more expensive to rent, then buying is almost a must. That is a different situation. Usually when folks decide to rent it's because they think it's cheaper. In your case, not so :)!
Hi Dale-Exactly!
Hi Maggie-Thank you :)!
Hi Gary-Educating buyers and making sure they are ready is a huge part of it too. It just comes with knowing your clients and where they are at.

Brenda, I have always thought that home ownership was the way to go even when I bought my first home back in the 80s when interest rates were double digits. Thanks goodness we are still able to deduct property taxes and interests on our homes.
Hi Jerry-I don't think that is going anywhere anytime soon Jerry. Not being able to deduct interest on taxes would be the nail in the coffin for housing :)!
