Cranberry Bogs in Cape Cod MA

With the holiday season just around the corner, and thoughts of those big meals to be consumed, some of which will have a bit of roasted turkey, the bogs that are scattered around Cape Cod are getting ready for harvest. Cape Cod has many cranberry bogs situated in the off road areas of the inner areas. The soil in the Cape is ideal for the growing of Cranberries, which are similar in many ways to strawberries.
The right amount of acid, gravel, sand and peat form the perfect bed. Water is a key ingredient as well, but causes problems only when going to harvest.

If you look closely at the photo you can see the berries approaching their peak, and will probably be picked real soon.
The Cape Cod Growers Association has organized the farms on the Cape to benefit the farmers of course adn to educate the consumer.
Either, very shprtly these berries will make their way to juice, jams, and of course that famous jelly.

Ed, I remember that old Ocean Spray commercial with the guys standing with their hip boots in one of these bogs. Love cranberries!
Very cool. I guess Thanksgiving is just around the corner.
So it is true that cranberries are submersed in water and then harvested, I had no idea! Thank you for the information on cranberries Ed. I believe I learned something today!
Cranberries are super healthy and often not available fresh. Glad to be seeing them around and so readily available these days.
Ed- I loved this - my sister is always talking about those cranberry bogs on the Cape, and I have never actually seen them. Thanks! Love cranberry sauce!
Hi Ed - Middlefield, MA which is very close to the Cape Cod area is known as the Cranberry Capital of the World. Ocean Spray has its corporate headcorquarters in Middleborough, Massacheusetts. You can see many cranberry bogs on the tourist steam train ride out of Hyannis.
Ed I did not realize that we had any cranberry bogs here in New England.

Ed, have to tell you we had our Canadian Thanksgiving feast last weekend and those little red berries were every bit as tasty as they look......relax we saved you some!
Getting back to this post a little late, I'm sorry.
Sharon, a splash of red on that clear will add just the right taste, enjoy
Joan, we saw people walking through the trails in the bogs and thought they were starting to harvest, but it was just their exercise.
Pat, those commercials are active again, it's their time of year
Ellie, we were out with the grandson looking for Halloween costumes and had a problem getting there for all the Christmas stuff in the way
No Wanda, they grow in areas with a lot of water around them, but the mixture doesn't want too much, especially for the picking for the machinery they use.
Leah, they are great for people with kidney difficulties or infections, Their acid nature is a natural cure
Dagny, there are very common in that entire Ma area, not just the Cape. I can recall stepping into one in the Quincy area by mistake, and going up to my knees in the muck.
Marc, so true, and they are quite colorful when the berries start to ripen. The fields have a red sheen
George they are very common in the Northeast, as far south as New Jersey
Ginny, take a few moments to stop and walk through them, they are different, but don't wear those Red Shoes.
Hi Al & Peg, that's right your Thanskgiving is a month early. Thanks for leaving some of those berries for the rest of us.
