Mortgage Loan Scam Alert!
At Benchmark Mortgage are dedicated to not only servicing our clients and getting them the best mortgage to fit their needs but to protect them also. With all the recent changes in the mortgage industry and the closing of over a hundred lenders we thought you should be made aware of this.
We have been made aware that an old scam is resurfacing because of the current mortgage environment. Please pass this information on to all of your friends, neighbors and family members that have mortgages on their homes.
The scam works in this way: A third party comes along claiming to be the new servicer of your mortgage loan. They then begin collecting your monthly payments and will continue until they are caught! Although mortgage notes are sold to different servicers, sometimes more than once, this scam could go unnoticed and cause a lot of damage and possibly loss.
The way to get around this scam: By law, when a servicer sells your mortgage, both the old loan servicer and the new loan servicer must send you a letter in writing. If you get a notice, call your current lender and ask them if they sold the loan. Make sure that you use your account number from your current lender and not from the new paperwork. If you send your payment without checking, you may be out a large sum of money, late payments on your mortgage and/or a damaged credit rating!
